Zara Tindall and husband Mike’s baby ‘rollercoaster’: ‘Brace brace brace’

ZARA TINDALL and her husband Mike’s third child, Lucas, will be baptised this weekend – but the former rugby player confessed to a “rollercoaster” week when the little one arrived in a throwback interview.

Royal sources told The Sun the Queen is “very keen” to attend after the “great personal disappointment of missing last Sunday’s Remembrance events”.

This weekend’s joint ceremony is an unprecedented royal affair, believed to be the first time two royals have been baptised together.

Princess Anne’s daughter Zara and former England rugby hero Mike Tindall welcomed their third child, and first son, in March.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, shortly after Lucas was born on March 21, Mike said it had been a “rollercoaster of emotions”.

He had previously said he wanted a son as he already had two daughters with Zara — Mia Grace, six, and Lena Elizabeth, two.

They had decided to keep the baby’s sex a surprise.

Mike said on his ‘The Good, The Bad and The Rugby’ podcast a few days after Lucas’ birth: “Sunday got even better because a little baby boy arrived at my house!”

Without a name at the time, Lucas weighed 8lbs 4oz.

Mike continued “8lb, 4oz, very bonny. Arrived very quickly, didn’t make it to hospital, on the bathroom floor!

“So yeah, it was running to the gym. Get a mat. Get into the bathroom.

“Get the mat on the floor. Towels down. Brace, brace, brace.”

He clarified on Good Morning Britain that he did not personally deliver the baby.

He said: “Fortunately the midwife got there in time so I didn’t have to go down to the area… the downside… the wrong end, I got to stay at the top end and be supportive.”

He joked: “Sorry, the ‘business end’ would have been a far better way of describing it!

“It wasn’t what we were expecting, but Zara’s best friend Dolly, who is a maternity nurse, was there and had the situation in control.”

Dolly had also been present at the birth of both Mia and Lena.

Mike said that Dolly had recognised he and Zara would not have made it to hospital in time for the birth.

Mike continued: “And then the midwife arrived, which made me breathe a sigh of relief that I could just be chatting to Zara and trying to get her through it.”

He said it had been a “rollercoaster of emotions”, but admitted, “it’s nice to have a boy around to keep me company”.

Mike described Zara as a “warrior” on his podcast, and recalled the best part of home birth.

He said: “The best thing about being at home, the best thing was, as soon as he’s wrapped up, he’s skin on skin, straight downstairs.

“TV room. Golf on. This is what we’re doing.”

Having had his wish for his son granted, he joked a vasectomy would not be too far away.

He said: “I literally was like ‘Yep, snip, snip, snip.’ I’ve got a boy.

“I’m out. I’m out of here.”

Both Lucas and Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s son August have the middle name ‘Philip’ in a touching nod to the late Duke of Edinburgh, who died shortly after both were born.

Ahead of this weekend’s christening, Zara and Eugenie will need to decide which baby will wear the replica of the iconic Honiton Gown.

Royal christenings are steeped in tradition, however, they could choose not to use the gown at all, or swap between christenings should the order of service allow.

Some 62 royal babies had worn the original gown across 163 years before it was retired after Lady Louise Windsor’s christening in 2004.

A replica, made by the Queen’s personal wardrobe advisor Angela Kelly, has since been worn by the latest generation of royal babies.
