While the move is understood to have come as a major blow to the Royal Family, a source has suggested there was also a sense of relief after Harry and Meghan moved away from the UK.
The royal rift did not, however, come to an end after the move to California.
William and Kate felt ‘sense of relief’ after Harry and Meghan left for US.
Vanity Fair Royal Correspondent Katie Nicholl commented that the family’s trust in Harry was “shattered” after he and his wife criticised numerous aspects of the Firm in a 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview.
The Prince’s absence at the memorial service for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is also understood to have been considered a “snub”.
In his first speech as King, Charles III made special reference to his youngest son and his wife.
He said: “I want… to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
Princes Harry and William.
But commentators suggest the route to such a reconciliation remains unclear.
Hopes were raised when Charle’s two children and their wives presented a united front at ceremonies and other events following the passing of Her Majesty on September 8.
Thanking the Queen for “your commitment to service”, “your sound advice” and “your infectious smile”, Harry added: “As it comes to first meetings, we now honour my father in his new role as King Charles III”.
The roots of the rift stem, according to Ms Nicholl, directly from Harry’s decision to leave the Firm and move to the US.
“He always expected Harry would be his wingman; there was a long-term plan in place for the brothers to work together and support one another.”
Unless work is carried out to heal ongoing divisions, a “shadow”, the commentator warned, could be cast over the reign both of King Charles III and, further down the line, William too.
