William and Harry’s relationship ‘in gutter’ as brothers prepare to honour Prince Philip

PRINCE WILLIAM’s relationship with Prince Harry is “in the gutter” as the two brothers prepare for a reunion to honour Prince Philip at his funeral, a royal commentator claimed.

William and Harry are poised to meet in person for the first time since the Duke of Sussex joined his wife, Meghan Markle, in the couple’s jaw-dropping interview with Oprah Winfrey. Their shared grief over the death of the Duke of Edinburgh is an “ideal opportunity” for them to mend their alleged rift, Sir John Major has claimed. Sir John, who was William and Harry’s guardian after Princess Diana’s death, said he hoped their looming meeting would end “friction” between the pair.

But it will not be easy, as their relationship is said to be “in the gutter”.

Pod Save The Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.

In the podcast, Ms Gripper refers to reports that William has distanced himself from former friend Tom Bradby, as the ITV journalist is widely seen as a close confidante of Harry and Meghan.

Mr Myers said: “They’ve been friends for 20 years. They were very tight at one point.

“He did their engagement interview 11 years ago.

“But yes, he’s cut him out.

“He obviously thought that Tom Bradby, according to reports, has taken a side and that’s what happens, isn’t it?

“It’s perhaps not altogether surprising. Bradby was essentially becoming a mouthpiece for the Sussexes.

“He’d not only done the documentary out of southern Africa, he was also on Alan Titchmarsh’s show speaking about the brothers and their relationship.”

Mr Myers also added that William had reached a point where he’d “had enough” and thought “I need people around me when the chips are down”.

And he offered a bleak assessment of the second-in-line to the throne’s relationship with his brother that is particularly heartbreaking as Philip’s funeral looms.

He continued: “His relationship with his brother’s in the gutter at the moment and so he just needs some solid mates around him.

“He probably thought Tom didn’t have his best interests at heart.

“It’s difficult to start talking to people who are in the middle.

“Like you said, if it’s a relationship breakdown you don’t want other stuff getting back to the other half or your brother or whoever you’ve fallen out with.

“You’re probably careful around them, or you’re careful with your words.

“And then throw into the mixer that you’re a future King and your brother has fled to the other side of the world, it complicates matters even further, doesn’t it.”

The Duke of Sussex will fly from the US for the service, though it is not clear when.

Meghan will remain at home in California on the advice of doctors.

Members of the Royal Family will walk behind the coffin ahead of the funeral at Windsor Castle.

During a service today, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said that “for the Royal Family, as for every other, no words can reach into the depth of sorrow that goes into bereavement”.

The Archbishop is also expected to lead the Duke’s funeral on Saturday.

Philip died on Friday, aged 99.

In an interview at a service in Windsor, Prince Andrew said he loved his father, who was “always somebody you could go to”.

He added: “We’ve lost the grandfather of the nation.”
