Will the Queen visit RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year? The event royals ‘always enjoy’

THE QUEEN is known to adore gardening, so much so she is Patron of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). So will the Queen be attending the RHS’ flagship Chelsea Flower Show this year?

Every year gardening enthusiasts rejoice when the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is in full bloom. The Chelsea Flower Show is the crowning jewel of UK gardening events, with thousands of foliage fans flocking to the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea annually. The event took place virtually last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the event will be back in full swing for 2021, albeit at a later date than usual.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show has been scheduled to take place this year between September 21 to 26.

Along with members of the general public, many celebrities and members of the Royal Family attend the event every year.

The Queen herself has made several appearances at the show throughout her reign.

And while it is unknown whether the Queen will make an appearance this year, we can assume the Queen is eager to return to the show in its full glory after last year’s event was disrupted.

Last year the Queen sent a special message to people watching the show virtually, and she stated she and the Royal Family had “always enjoyed” their visits.

The Queen said: “On the occasion of the Opening of the Virtual Chelsea Flower Show 2020, I send my best wishes to all those associated with the Royal Horticultural Society.

“My family and I have always enjoyed visiting the Show, and I know that your Members and Supporters will be disappointed that they are unable to attend in person this year.

“As Patron of the Royal Horticultural Society, I was pleased to hear that you will be providing gardening advice and virtual sessions on your website, from Monday 18 to Saturday, May 23.

“I am sure that my grandmother, Queen Mary, who first attended the Chelsea Flower Show in 1916, would be delighted that many people today have an enthusiasm for horticulture, and that gardening remains a popular pastime in the United Kingdom.

“As you adapt to the present circumstances, I hope you find this unique event enjoyable and interesting.”

Another reason the Queen may have a visit scheduled this year is to see the RHS Queen’s Green Canopy Garden, which was designed by David Dodd.

The design will take up the largest plot at the Chelsea Flower Show this year, and is intended to celebrate the beauty of the natural world.

The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative is intended to encourage people to plant a tree for themselves to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

But the Queen may not be the only royal attending the event this year, with many of her children and grandchildren also big fans of the show.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has been known to champion the great outdoors, even designing her own Chelsea Flower Show garden on one occasion.

Kate helped to design the RHS Back to Nature Garden in 2019, which aimed to provide a beautiful space for children and families to enjoy.

Prince Charles is also known to adore the outside world, tending to his own gardens regularly around Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.

He also designed his own garden in 2002 in tribute to his grandmother, the Queen Mother, who died that year.

Prince Charles’ even secured a silver medal for his efforts, a prestigious gardening prize indeed.
