Why Royals won’t open Christmas presents on Christmas Day
Christmas is about to get a whole lot different for Royal-to-be Meghan Markle.
It was announced today Prince Harry’s fiancee will be spending Christmas with the Royal Family.
The stunning 36-year-old will join the Queen and the rest of the Royals at Her Maj’s Christmas retreat.
But Christmas at Sandringham in Norfolk is no ordinary one – this is a Royal Christmas, after all.
The biggest thing to get used to will be the presents – as the Royals don’t do British tradition when it comes to this.
Instead of ripping open the wrapping paper on December 25 like we do, they open the presents on Christmas Eve instead.
This is because the Royals are of German descent, and like to weave in its traditions.
And that’s just the start.
Being the world’s most famous Royal Family, present buying is impossible for people who have everything.
So instead, the family give each other jokey gifts instead, as well as the occasional luxury item.
All the presents will be laid out on a table in the drawing room on December 24, where everyone opens their gifts together after having afternoon tea.
And if one of Harry’s past presents for the Queen is anything to go by, Meghan’s in for a comedy treat.
It’s reported Harry once got his grandma a shower cap with the slogan “ain’t life a bitch”.
Fortunately for him, the Queen loved it, and she’s not the only one to receive a funny gift.
Prince Charles’ favourite ever gift is reportedly a white leather toilet seat from Princess Anne, which he found so comfy it now travels with him on his overseas tours.
On the big day itself, Meghan will wake up to join the family for a breakfast buffet, before heading off to a church service where the whole family will be pictured in public.
After church comes a big lunch that includes salad and lobster, before – if they have space – a roasted turkey with all the trimmings.
When everyone finishes tucking into their food, the Royals will then gather round to watch the Queen’s speech on TV, before the fun really gets underway.
Because the rest of the night is devoted to charades, a game the Queen loves so much she stays up until midnight playing.
And with a professional actress in Meghan in the house, charades could be better than ever for Her Maj this time round.
