RUMOURS circulated last month that Sarah Paulson was the frontrunner to play Diana, Princess of Wales in the forthcoming second season of Feud, which will focus on her relationship with Prince Charles around the time of their divorce. However, the show’s producer Ryan Murphy has now suggested that casting for the role has not yet been decided as he discussed the complexity of finding somebody suitable to take on the part.
“Diana is obviously a powerful, sympathetic person and we have to handle her in a really cool way,” he said at a screening of Feud: Bette and Joan in New York, reports WWD. “She stood for a lot and I like how she was so outspoken and that’s what her story is going to be.”
“It’s become sort of a Scarlett O’Hara part,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “A lot of people want to be Diana, and we’re doing a very sympathetic portrayal of her. I don’t know. I’m open to both. I don’t know where we’re going to land.”
In a number of his recent projects, an added complication has been finding leading actors who resemble the person that they are portraying – something that Murphy feels is important when it comes to casting for a real-life character.
“Whenever I cast somebody [to play another famous person], I want to get it in the ballpark. Then you just shoot the sh*t out of the make-up testing and get it right.”
