London-based jewellers Diamond Rocks has valued royal engagement rings of past brides, but whose ring was worth £3.1 million and which is valued at just £75,000?

Grace Kelly’s rock is widely estimated to be worth £3.1 million in today’s money and is by far the most expensive royal wedding ring in today’s money.

The 10.5-carat emerald cut diamond flanked by two baguettes raised the record-breaking amount at auction.

It was actually the second ring Prince Rainier III chose for her, after he originally popped the question with a Cartier eternity band, but later decided his offering needed to be “upgraded”.

In the second place, but still valued at an eye-watering amount is Wallis Simpson’s emerald ring by Cartier, estimated at £1.8 million by today’s standards.

Despite there being a huge amount of controversy surrounding the engagement of Simpson and Edward VIII which caused his abdication, the bride-to-be had no qualms about displays of extravagance in the 1930s when she accepted the ring.

Next up is Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s £1.2 million engagement ring which features a pair of twinned cushion cut diamonds set against a yellow gold band.

The diamonds were rumoured to be as much as six carats each and came from the exclusive jeweller Van Cleef and Arpels.

Princess Diana’s blue Ceylon sapphire, which is now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, outranks Meghan’s bespoke trilogy engagement ring in terms of value.

The famous blue sapphire is valued in the region of £300,000 today, according to Diamond Rocks.

Prince Charles and Diana were the only royal couple to pick their ring from a catalogue, although the ring gained more sentimental significance after Diana’s death when it was passed down to the then-Kate Middleton by Prince William in tribute to his late mother.

Prince William said in an engagement interview: “It was my way of making sure mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

The ring features 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, all set in 18-karat white gold.

Meghan Markle’s ring comes next and it features diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection as well as a rock sourced from Botswana.

It is widely estimated to be worth in the region of £120,000 and features a slightly elongated cushion cut central diamond of approximately three to four carats.

The central stone came from Botswana, while the smaller 0.75-carat diamonds were taken from Diana’s personal collection.

Royal wedding rings worn by brides are traditionally made from Welsh Gold but very few men in the monarchy have chosen to put on a wedding band.

Meghan is expected to follow the tradition when she marries Prince Harry in May, however the royal is unlikely to wear one.
