Where does the Queen stay throughout the year? A calendar of royal residences

QUEEN ELIZABETH II has multiple palaces she calls home, but when she chooses to live in them varies from season to season. Express.co.uk analyses the Queen’s royal residences throughout the calendar year.

Queen Elizabeth II has a home for just about every season. Her Majesty likes to change her address depending on what time of year it is. Here is an annual timeline of where the Queen lives.

In true regal style, Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t have just one home like us.

She has multiple palaces throughout the UK.

But there are four residences the Queen truly calls home.

When the Queen chooses to stay in them depends largely on what time of year it is.

Buckingham Palace

Colloquially called ‘The House’ by some members of the Royal Family, Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official London residence.

Arguably it is the epicentre of the Royal Family, as it’s the administrative headquarters of the Monarch.

The Queen spends the majority of her time here – making it a short commute to the office.

Windsor Castle

Although Buck House may be the Queen’s main residence, she likes to get out of the city for the weekends.

Windsor Castle is situated in a vast park in Berkshire, just outside of London.

It provides the Queen with a welcomed breath of fresh air, as well as being within easy reach of London.

The Queen always spends Easter at Windsor Castle too.

Balmoral Castle

Balmoral is a favourite summer retreat for the Queen.

Set within 50,000 acres in Scotland, it is a place where the Royal Family can hide from the pressures of royal duties and prying eyes.

The Queen spends most of the summer here and encourages the rest of her family to stay with her.

Sandringham Estate

Every Christmas the entire royal family decamps to Norfolk.

The royals spend their Christmases together on the Sandringham Estate, which the Queen inherited from her father George VI.
