Royal wedding 2018: What can Meghan Markle’s US guests expect at a British wedding?

Meghan Markle will marry Prince Harry next month in the biggest wedding this year. However there a few differences between an American and British wedding, Meghan’s guests need to be prepared for on May 19.

Meghan and Harry’s nuptials in May will contain all the pomp and circumstance expected from a royal wedding.

However, there are certain British traditions and elements which may come as a surprise to Meghan and her American contingent.

A classic British wedding is a truly baffling and eye-opening experience.

Here is what Megan’s guests can expect on the big day and how it differs from a wedding across the pond.

1. Hats are a big thing at British weddings
Wearing hats at a wedding is extremely British, it may seem old fashioned, but hats still feature at society weddings and traditional ceremonies.

If you want to decipher which guests are on Meghan’s side, then it will be the women without the headgear, as this fashion choice has not made its way over the pond…yet.

At Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie put on a slightly eccentric display with their choice of headgear.

2. There is no such thing as Cocktail Hour
In the US there is a strange phenomenon at weddings known as the Cocktail Hour.

At British weddings, we need no indication it is time to drink, as weddings are usually a highly alcoholic affair from the moment the ceremony is over.

3. There will be a flower girl or page boy who throws a tantrum
It is not popular in the UK to have lots of adult bridesmaids, with most brides picking two to four adult bridesmaids.

Instead it is tradition to have a flurry of children follow the bride as she walks down the aisle, and it is highly likely one of these little people will throw a stropas they carry out the duty.

During Pippa Middleton’s wedding, Prince George was the page boy who had to be given a stern talking to by the Duchess of Cambridge when he got a bit tired and emotional.

4. It will always rain
Plenty of British weddings have been ruined by the drizzle of rain, despite the weather forecast promising no showers…

Meghan’s guests will be used to glorious Californian sunshine, and a spot of rain may come as a surprise to them, but not to the British guests.

5. Be ready for breakfast – in the evening
The meal at a British wedding is known as the “wedding breakfast” even if it is at 5pm.

Apparently, this dates back to a time when the bride and groom would fast before they married in the morning and it is one of those quirky traditions that is still around today.

6. Celebrations will be topped off with breakfast of champions
Meghan’s Californian crew may be more used to avocado toast and matcha tea, than bacon, black pudding and baked beans the morning after the wedding, but no English wedding weekend would be complete without a full fry-up.
