Velvet is having another moment this season, though honestly we can never get enough of it—so we were thrilled to see the Duchess of Cambridge’s chic take on the trend last night.

A black velvet silk dress that features full-length sleeves and flares just above the knees, the piece is both classic and modern in design—there’s a particular vintage feel to its row of huge Swarovski buttons (made out of jet, glass, and silver.)Joining Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Cambridge at the Royal Festival of Remembrance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Kate wore a truly covetous coat dress by one of her favorite designers, Catherine Walker.
The duchess accessorized with Diana’s old pearl diamond earrings, which she previously wore to a glittering state banquet in July.

Now is as good a time as any to revisit that event, at which Kate broke out one of her most iconic looks: the delicacy of a fairytale Marchesa gown in dusky rose balanced by a massive ruby-encrusted necklace and the sheer symbolism of the famous Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara.
Last night marked the 90thanniversary of the Royal Festival of Remembrance, which the queen attended in her role as patron of the Royal British Legion.
On Remembrance Sunday she and the duchess made another public appearance, on a balcony overlooking the Cenotaph memorial from where they watched Prince Charles lay a poppy wreath to honor Britain’s war dead.

Kate opted for a more somber outfit for this event, wearing a large black hat and military-style coat—its large gold buttons echoing the duchess’s pearl and gold sunburst earrings.
