Royal commentators Christina Garibaldi and Molly Mulshine were shocked after reading some royal fans were furious at Prince William’s Earthshot Prize as they disliked how the future king was turning into a celebrity. The star-studded event saw famous actors and singers with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dressing up in sustainable posh outfits. But some royal watchers were angry at the Royal Family being seen as celebrities with the royal commentators quickly dispelling any attacks in a stern put-down.
Speaking on the Royally US podcast, Ms Garibaldi read a message from a listener who sarcastically said they thought royals were not supposed to be celebrities.
Both Prince William and Prince Harry have been criticised for rubbing shoulders with celebrities with some devoted fans arguing it is not the place for the Royal Family.
But Ms Garibaldi and Ms Mulshine were not convinced and defended Prince William.
Ms Garibaldi said: “This [message] was, of course, talking about the Earth Shot prize awards where we announced the star-studded lineup and a lot of people were like I thought maybe royals shouldn’t be rubbing elbows with, you know, the likes of Ed Sheeran and Coldplay.”
Prince William met with a wide range of guests at the awards
Ms Mulshine added: “I don’t understand this, people say this a lot, and I don’t understand that if they’re not… celebrities are just famous people so if they’re not celebrities then what are they?
“Because they’re not politicians, they’re figureheads, so I think it makes you know the function of royals is the same function as celebrities.#
“We all know who they are and it helps to draw our attention to the things that they’re doing because they’re famous and so I don’t get it, I don’t get the Royals aren’t supposed to be celebrities thing.”
Ms Garibaldi agreed and said she could understand why the royals would ask celebrities to attend their events as it brings more recognition to whatever the cause is.
The Royal Family was described as being the original celebrities
She added the royals are celebrities and are the most famous people in the world.
Ms Mulshine then said: “They were like the OG celebrities, before Hollywood the celebrities were just royalty and nobility so I don’t get this line of thinking.
The Earthshot Prize was set up by Prince William to award people who are trying to save the planet.
Two friends who grow coral and the country of Costa Rica for its reforesting efforts were among the five winners given a £1million prize.
Prince William wore old clothes during the environmentally friendly event
The awards also followed strict environmentally friendly rules with no attendees being flown in with Prince William and Kate arriving in an Aldi electric car.
Kate and William also wore old clothing for the event with Kate wearing an Alexander McQueen dress she first wore in 2011 after her wedding.
Prince William also reportedly wore trousers that were believed to be over 20 years old.
