It’s official: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged.

A statement was released by Clarence House confirming that the couple are engaged after 18 months of dating, and will wed in Spring 2018.

“His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle,” the statement, posted to Twitter said.

“The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding will be announced in due course.

“His Royal Highness and Ms.Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his Family.

“Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle’s parents.

“The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.”

So we know that they’ve already set a date, and will be living right by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – but what else can we expect now that the one-time “most eligible bachelor in the world” has decided to give up singledom forever?

Will she become Princess Meghan?

Short answer: no. However, she will be given a royal title by the Queen. Just as Prince Harry will become a Duke when he weds, Meghan would be a Duchess. Duke and Duchess of Sussex are their likely titles, while Clarence and Buckingham are also available.

Royal expert Imogen Lloyd Webber told PEOPLE that as Harry’s title is His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, her official tag would be Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales. However, she would not be referred to as Princess Meghan because you can’t become royal through marriage.

Meghan’s divorce is unlikely to affect the couple

The royal family’s aversion to divorcees has been well-documented over the years. In 1936, Edward VIII sought to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite divorced from her first husband and trying to split with her second. The government did not approve these ambitions, so Edward chose to abdicate, leaving his brother, and Queen Elizabeth’s father George VI to take the crown.

Similarly, when the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret revealed plans to marry divorcee Peter Townsend, the relationship was called off. “Mindful of the Church’s teaching that Christian marriage is indissoluble, and conscious of my duty to the Commonwealth, I have resolved to put these considerations before any others,” she said in a statement.
