The sweet name Princess Charlotte uses at school – and why she uses it

PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, the middle child of the Cambridge family, has several nicknames, one of which she uses for a specific purpose.

Although it may not seem like a particular concern among the royals, Prince Charlotte likes to appear “normal”.

The young royal, six, recently started her first day of Year 2 at Thomas’s Battersea in South London.

When she walks through the school doors with her brother, eight-year-old heir to the throne Prince George, they receive the same treatment any other pupil would.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge endorse this, meaning she goes by a traditional first and last name while learning.

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Her Royal Highness Princess of Cambridge, becomes Charlotte Cambridge in the classroom.

The nickname rule also applies to her brother, who is officially His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

He becomes George Cambridge while at school.

The naming decision comes from a tradition Prince William and his brother once observed.

During their time at school and training for the military, both Princes William and Harry couldn’t go by their equally lengthy titles.

Instead, they borrowed an honour held by Prince Charles.

Their father was the Prince of Wales, a title they incorporated into traditional names of their own.

They became William and Harry Wales for the duration of their time in the military.

Both Prince George and Princess Charlotte have alternative nicknames given by their classmates and parents.

Parents speaking to Vanity Fair said George is “very popular and has lots of friends” at St Thomas’s.

The publication added there is “very little fuss made about who he is”, but the children still understand his position in the line of succession.

As such, they know him as Prince George in their own way.

Princess Charlotte has two more nicknames used by her parents at home.

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, once revealed to Belfast blogger Laura-Ann that she calls her daughter “Lottie” sometimes.

And a video promoting the Duchess’s exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019 recorded Prince William calling his daughter “Mignonette”, which means “small and delicate” in French.
