When Prince Charles is King, his eldest son Prince William will become the heir apparent to the throne.
As such, William will inherit the Duchy of Cornwall and become the Duke of Cornwall.
As William’s spouse, Kate will hold the equivalent title of Duchess of Cornwall, the title currently held by Charles’s wife Camilla.
The royal titles Kate could receive when Charles is King
Kate may one day hold the title of Duchess of Cornwall, which Camilla currently uses
Princess of Wales
Like her late mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales, Kate may also be known by the title in the future.
Unlike the Duke of Cornwall title, the heir apparent does not automatically become the Prince of Wales.
The Prince of Wales title has to be allocated by the Sovereign, as was the case when the Queen gave the title to Charles in 1958 – six years after the start of her reign.
One day William and Kate will likely be the Prince and Princess of Wales
Dr Morris explained: “When Prince Charles becomes King, his eldest son does not automatically inherit his father’s title as the Prince of Wales.
“However, it is likely that any delay will be short before the title is conferred.
“Accordingly, when her husband becomes Prince of Wales, she will become Princess of Wales as well as sharing the heir’s other title of the Duke of Cornwall, plus the titles he uses when in Scotland and Northern Ireland [such as] Duke of Rothesay and Earl of Carrick.
“She is already a senior member of the Royal Victorian Order, entry to which – like the Garter – is entirely in the Queen’s personal gift.”
Prince Charles could appoint Kate to the Most Noble Order of the Garter as King
Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
In the New Year Honours for 2022, the Queen made Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
Camilla has been appointed to the Order for her services to the monarchy.
Several members of the Royal Family have been appointed to the Order during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, Princess Anne and many of the Queen’s first cousins have been awarded the honour in recent decades.
The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the nation’s most prestigious order of chivalry and it has been in place for centuries.
It stands to reason that Kate, Duchess of Cambridge will likely be appointed a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter during the future reigns of Charles or William.
Dr Morris added: “Finally, granted the precedent of the Duchess of Cornwall’s appointment as the first spouse of the heir to be appointed to the Garter, it seems likely that the Duchess of Cambridge can also expect to be similarly appointed in due course after her father-in-law’s succession.”
