The Queen’s birthday: Monarch celebrates turning 92 with royal bash
The Queen is to turn 92 on Saturday and a whole host of stars are lined up to help the monarch celebrate. To mark the grand occasion, the BBC is throwing the Queen’s Birthday Party at the Royal Albert Hall, where several members of the royal family are expected to attend.
The birthday celebrations will take place after a busy week for the Royal Family and the Queen in which she hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in London on Friday.
And the concert will reflect this on the night, with performances by artists from across the Commonwealth.
Music from each decade of the Queen’s reign has also been worked into the programme.
The concert will feature a whole array of singers including Sir Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, Craig David, Anne-Marie, Shawn Mendes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as a performance by Sting and Shaggy.
Britain will also mark the longest-reigning monarch’s birthday with gun salutes in central London at midday, a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London.
The Queen celebrates two birthdays each year, her actual birthday on April 21 and her official birthday usually on the second Saturday in June.
This year her official birthday will fall on Saturday, June 9.
All British sovereigns are given the option of having an ‘official’ birthday and the Queen chooses to have her second birthday in June.
The Queen turns 92 on Saturday
This tradition dates back to 1748 when George II decided to celebrate his birthday twice – once on the date of his birth in November and then again in the summer.
In June, for her official birthday, the monarch will be joined by other members of the Royal Family at the Trooping the Colour parade, also known as the Birthday Parade.
The parade moves between Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horseguards’ Parade.
The monarch and her family will then make a public appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
The Queen’s birthday concert will be live on BBC One and Radio 2 from 8pm on Saturday, April 21.
