The Queen LOST her bouquet on her wedding day – THIS is why Meghan Markle will have TWO

Meghan Markle will two bouquets prepared in case of an emergency after the Queen inadvertently sparked the royal tradition when during the commotion of her big day the then-Princess Elizabeth managed to lose her flowers.

Meghan Markle will have two bouquets on her wedding day on May 19 and it is all thanks to her future grandmother-in-law the Queen.

David Longman, who designed Princess Diana’s bouquet, revealed the reason for the tradition as he described the late Princess’s two bouquets during the ITV documentary Invitation to a Royal Wedding.

When asked why Diana had two bouquets, Mr Longman said: “Well if we go back to the Queen’s wedding in 1947, when you look at the state photographs of all the bridesmaids and the royal guests and there’s the Queen without her bouquet.

“It got lost. So in the middle of their honeymoon, they had to get dressed up again in their wedding clothes and my father had to provide another bouquet for those photographs.

“Now we make two bouquets so that doesn’t happen again.”

Longmans Florist in London has made the royal bouquets for everyone from the Queen, who was then Princess Elizabeth in 1947, to Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana in 1981.

Diana’s bouquet measured 42 inches and followed royal tradition by featuring myrtle flowers.

Mr Longman added: “We did exactly the same procedure as for the Queen. I went to see her.

“I also went to see the dress designer, the Emanuels. They wanted it to be large and so did she.

“And then we made a sample bouquet. And she said, ‘I want it bigger than that’

“I said it’s going to be 42 inches, and she said that’s fine.

“This for the time afterwards changed the whole fashion.”

When asked whether he had to instruct Diana how to the carry the bouquet, Mr Longman said: “Very much so. One always instructs a bride how to hold the bouquet because if you’re not careful a bridge will hold it up like a chest protector.

“It has to be held down, so it enhances the dress.”

He added: “The first one had to be delivered, which I delivered at eight o’clock to Buckingham Palace and we had a police escort with a motorcyclist who took us all through the city.”

Royal florist Paul Thomas also spoke on the documentary – which was aired last night as part of ITV’s Royal Week – about the flowers that will feature in Meghan Markle’s bouquet when she marries Prince Harry next month.

Mr Thomas said: “We are almost certainly going to see some peonies. It’s that full flower and that full colour of roses.

“They are so romantic.

“And how can you miss the lily of the valley, which is the flower for May.

“The most amazing perfume, I think in the world.

“This is myrtle, which is a real tradition in royal bouquets going right back to Queen Victoria’s daughter.”
