The Queen is reportedly planning to abdicate the throne and make Charles King

With reports the Queen may abdicate and so many changes to the royal succession rules in recent years it’s no surprise if you’ve found yourself asking – who’s next?

Major changes to Royal succession rules came into place six years ago, but if Queen Elizabeth abdicates, retires, or passes, the throne will pass to Prince Charles.

Charles would become the 42nd monarch and according to reports it could become a reality sooner than we think.

Apparently the Queen has told her inner circle that if she is still on the throne when she reaches 95 years of age she will ask for legislation to grant her eldest son full power to reign while she is still alive.

After Prince Charles, his eldest son Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, is next in line to the throne, followed by young Prince George and then Princess Charlotte.

Princess Charlotte comes before Prince Harry due to some of the recent changes in the rules. In 2011, the leaders of 16 British Commonwealth countries – including Australia – voted to alter the traditional laws to allow daughters as well as sons to be in line to the throne.

Previously daughters only got the gig if there were no living sons.

So why could Prince Philip never become King?

After 65 years of Royal duties, Prince Philip stepped back from public life after his final engagement on August 2. But due to English common laws he could never be King.

Whereas the wife of a King is known as a ‘Queen Consort’ and can take the title of Queen even if she doesn’t rule, if a female marries a man with a ‘lesser’ title, he is not eligible to the royal title.
