The Queen has a bedtime ‘rule’ Royal Family MUST follow on Christmas Day
THE Queen has a bedtime “rule” at Christmas that the royal family must follow to avoid upsetting her, it has been revealed.
No matter how sleepy the royals are when they stay at the Queen’s Sandringham House residence in Norfolk, they must all stay up until midnight and play charades. The royals must all play the game until the Queen says she has had enough, reports The Mirror – or they risk upsetting her. But that is not the only rule the monarch has in place over the festive season. The 93-year-old also has three more rules for when the royal family open their presents. The rules come into play on Christmas Eve, which is when they all gather to open gifts.
The tradition are that nobody should open their present until gift “supervisor” Prince Philip gives them the nod to do so, presents should also involve “gag gifts” and finally, the cheaper the better when it comes to gift-giving at Sandringham.
Some bizarre but memorable gifts from past Christmases include a grow-your-own-girlfriend kit given to Prince Harry by Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, before he met Meghan and a white leather toilet seat given by Princess Anne to Prince Charles.
Late royal Diana once fell foul of the family’s “cheap and cheerful” rule when she gave members beautiful cashmere sweaters.
In return, Princess Anne was said to have give her a toilet roll holder.
The following year, Diana gave Sarah Ferguson a leopard print bath mat.
This year, pregnant Meghan will spend her first Christmas at Sandringham as an expectant mother.
Though it is the second time she has spent Christmas with the Queen, who at Harry’s request had her invited last year before their engagement was announced to the public.
Though this Christmas could see tension between the Cambridges and the Sussexes following reports from the Daily Mail Meghan and Harry were moving to Frogmore House following a rift with Kate and William.
Though these reports were rubbished by a Kensington Palace spokeswoman who said the couple were moving our of the Palace as they wanted more space for Meghan’s mother Doria when she visits from LA.
