Spanish royal feud deepens: Queen Letizia ‘hurt’ as friend reveals real story behind video
Queen Letizia has been left “hurt” by the storm over an explosive run-in with her mother-in law, Queen Sofia, in astonishing scenes during the Spanish Royal Family’s annual Easter break in Majorca.
The 45-year-old was simply trying to protect her daughters, Princess Leonor and Sofia, according to a former co-worker.
Imma Aguilar said the mother-of-two is “very committed” to protecting her daughters and she had displayed a “motherly reaction”.
She told El círculo: “I talked to Queen Letizia a while ago, and she is worried and quite desolated by this situation; she is very committed to the care of her daughters, with the protection of their image, she worries who takes photos of them.
“She worries where they come from, who approaches them. It’s a very motherly reaction.”
Letizia, 45, stepped out in Madrid today for her first public appearance since a media storm which saw a clip of her in a tense moment with her mother-in-law go viral.
During the Spanish royals’ annual Easter break, Queen Sofia looked every inch the proud grandmother as she put her arms round her granddaughters’ shoulders ready to pose for pictures at Palma Cathedral.
But her former TV newsreader daughter-in-law first stood in the way – and then seemed to push Queen Sofia’s arm away from her eldest daughter after a brief exchange of words that looked far from friendly.
The 79-year-old – backed today by family in Greece where she was born – put her arm back round Princess Leonor’s shoulder after resisting Queen Letizia’s challenge.
But the 12-year-old, standing beside her 10-year-old sister Infanta Sofia, finished the job her mother had started by preventing her grandmother having her way.
It was left to Queen Sofia’s husband King Felipe VI to try to restore peace as his 80-year-old father looked on nonplussed.
Describing how she thinks Queen Letizia will now be feeing after the footage emerged, Ms Aguilar said the Queen would be “worried and hurt”.
She added: “It’s been silly, it’s not a serious issue, nothing has happened, it’s just a natural gesture.
“She’s not a person who has been educated from the beginning to have a certain public behaviour, she’s very committed to her work, her profession, with the role she plays and, as a mother, with her daughters.
“She has felt affected, she is worried and hurt.”
