SOPHIE, Countess of Wessex, looked focused as the khaki-wearing royal tried her hand at gaming during a visit to RAF Wittering for the Wessex Cup.

Prince Edward’s wife also shares a special connection to the RAF base in north-west Cambridgeshire as she holds the honorary title of Air Commodore at RAF Wittering.

The Countess of Wessex was welcomed to the military base by Julie Spence OBE, the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

The mother-of-two seemed to take the gaming experience in her stride as she was pictured with a headset on and eyes locked on the TV screen.

The Countess of Wessex’s appearance at RAF Wittering marked the royal’s return to regal duties after her annual summer break.

Sophie’s most recent royal appearance came in July when she joined visually impaired cyclists for a tandem ride around Bushy Park in south west London.

And the experience was said to have rocked the royal.

Monica Smith, appeal manager at Vision Foundation, joined the Countess on the ride.

She recalled: “We rode round the park and Sophie was describing various things that were happening.

“It was only one instant when she suddenly said ‘oh my goodness’.

“She said: ‘There are some massive stags with big horns and I’m a bit scared about going past them, I don’t know what to do.’

“Obviously I couldn’t see how enormous these things were, but we cycled past them and she breathed a sigh of relief.”

Last month, alongside other members of the Firm, Sophie made the 520 mile trip from her and Prince Edward’s home in Bagshot to the Queen’s Scottish retreat in Balmoral.

The Wessex’s trip to Scotland has also been considered to be of significance to Her Majesty – especially after the Duke of Edinburgh passed away aged 99 in April.

A royal insider told The Sun: “The Queen loves the fact that Louise and James relish their time at Balmoral, and she has become particularly close to Louise, who seems to have become her favourite grandchild, closely followed by James…

“Louise also endeared herself to everyone by looking after William and Kate’s children when they were up here.

“Because of her obvious artistic skill, the Queen allowed Louise to look through some of the collection of Queen Victoria’s Highlands sketches which are kept at Balmoral but are rarely dug out these days.”Last month, alongside other members of the Firm, Sophie made the 520 mile trip from her and Prince Edward’s home in Bagshot to the Queen’s Scottish retreat in Balmoral.
