Sarah Ferguson: Why Princess Diana stopped talking to ‘best friend’ Fergie before death
Sarah Ferguson was once ‘best friends’ with the late Princess Diana. But the two stopped talking six months before Diana’s death because of something Fergie did.
Sarah Ferguson, 58, once shared a very close relationship with Princess Diana, with the two said to have been “best friends”.
They were both the wives of the Queen’s sons, being able to share their royal ups and downs with each other.
Both marrying into the Royal Family at young ages, Fergie and Diana quickly became very close, pictured together at sporting events and even holidayed together.
But just before Princess Diana’s tragic death the twosome stopped talking, because of something Sarah did.
Their fallout was down to Sarah’s 1996 book, My Story, where Sarah shared an unflattering story about the late Princess of Wales.

Sarah shared an anecdote about Diana that reportedly left her angry and upset.
The former Duchess of York was quoted saying she had got a verruca after wearing a pair of shoes borrowed from Diana.
The fact that Diana was even mentioned at all reportedly strained their relationship, with Sarah allegedly having promised to not talk about her.
Following the publication of the story, Diana stopped all contact with Sarah, with Sarah trying to reach out on multiple occasions.
Despite trying to make amends, the “best friends” Sarah and Diana never spoke again, with Diana tragically passing away in 1997.
Fergie’s feelings towards her former friend and details of their fallout were touched on in her 2011 book Finding Sarah.
The former Duchess wrote: “Diana was one of the quickest wits I knew; nobody made me laugh like she did.
“We took vacations together with our children. Sadly, at the end [of the Princess’s life] we hadn’t spoken for a year, although I never knew the reason, except that once Diana got something in her head it stuck there for a while.”
The royal wives had had a long history of friendship, knowing each other for six years before Fergie married Andrew in 1986.
Diana is even said to have played matchmaker to a young Sarah and Prince Andrew, reintroducing them to each other at a party at Windsor Castle.
The years that followed saw their friendship grow thick and fast, being famously photographed at Royal Ascot poking Fergie’s old school friend Lulu in the behind with their umbrellas, called “brollies”.
Sarah and Diana’s pre-fallout friendship is reminiscent of the friendship currently being shared by Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
Much like Fergie and Diana, the Duchesses were spotted enjoying a day out at Wimbledon last weekend.
The pair met with ball boys and girls, junior players and former Wimbledon Ladies Champions, before taking their seats for the tennis.
Watching the Men’s Single’s Final, Kate and Meghan appeared to have a close bond, both from non-royal families with a lot expected of them from their royal marriages.
