Sarah said: “I think to myself that honestly, my mother-in-law has been more of a mother to me than my mother.
“I absolutely think there is no greater mentor because, from a little girl to now, the consistency of Her Majesty has been a great honour, it’s a huge honour – makes me want to cry.”
Sarah’s mother Susan Barrantes moved to Argentina to live with her husband, a professional polo player.
Ms Barrantes died in a car crash in 1998, and Sarah added that she experienced “so much pain” when her mother died.
Sarah said: “Because I went through so much pain losing mum, I lost my way and I became deeply deeply insecure.
“I kept asking everybody for advice. And I never trusted my own judgement of myself.
“I have got my lovely ex-husband Andrew – he always believes in me and always did believe in me.
“But my greatest mentor – and I know this sounds so weird to say it – and a person who believes in me is the Queen and has never faltered.”
Sarah is known to have a good friendship with her ex-husband despite splitting in the early 1990s, with the pair sharing the Royal Lodge residence in Berkshire.
Sarah and Andrew have two daughters together, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and the York family has grown this year to include Sarah and Andrew’s first grandchild.
Princess Eugenie welcomed her son, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, with her husband Jack Brooksbank in February 2021.
Sarah has spoken about her immense pride now her youngest daughter and son-in-law are parents.
Sarah previously told PEOPLE: “When little August, my grandson, comes in to see me, and now it’s slightly easier, I firstly look at my wonderful and beautiful daughter Eugenie and Jack.
“I am so proud of them as parents. I’ve known Jack for 10-12 years now, so he’s like my son, he is my son-in-law, but he’s like my son.
“I adore them both. To see Eugenie and Jack being beautiful parents of little August, I’m really proud.”
Sarah and Andrew will become grandparents again later this year, as their eldest daughter Princess Beatrice is expecting.
The couple announced earlier this year they are expecting a baby in the autumn.
A statement from Buckingham Palace read: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting a baby in autumn of this year.
“The Queen has been informed and both families are delighted with the news.”
