Royal SNUB: How Diana ‘dreamed of live with Mr Wonderful’ after Charles divorce

2776

PRINCESS Diana dreamed of a normal life with her “real love” Hasnat Khan after her divorce from Prince Charles was finalised, a documentary reveals.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles brought a formal end to their famously turbulent marriage with their 1996 divorce. They had been separated since 1992, and although Diana’s name is now linked through tragedy to that of Dodi Al-Fayed, friends say that her real love was the man she had been seeing largely in secret since 1995. Diana met British-Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan when he was working at the Royal Brompton Hospital, and they were together for two years.

2017 Amazon Prime documentary “Princess Diana – The Woman Inside” hears from friends and former aides to the late Princess of Wales.

Diana’s friend Simone Simmons says: “When she started seeing Hasnat Khan, she’d met her Mr Wonderful.

“She said he was the only man in her life who didn’t want anything.”

She continues: “Even when she offered to pay to repair his exhaust because his car kept backfiring. We’d be on the phone and she’d say, ‘Can you hear that? Do you think we could be arrested for this?”

Ms Simmons also reveals that the Princess of Wales used to daydream of a normal life with her doctor boyfriend.

She says: “Diana used to say, we could live in a three-up, two-down semi.

“I would say yes, and pigs are going to fly.

“That sort of life could never be, but it’s what she wanted.”

Daily Mail editor Richard Kay adds: “He felt that he wouldn’t be able to continue his work as a heart surgeon because she would completely overshadow it, everything they did, there would be no privacy.

“The only way he felt that they would have a future together would be if she were to move to Pakistan, and that of course threw up difficult problems for Diana.

“There was real love between them but their relationship could not go on.”
