Royal FEUD: How Sarah Ferguson was ‘branded IDIOT’ by Prince Philip
SARAH FERGUSON revealed that Prince Philip called her an “idiot” in a frank throwback documentary.
Sarah Ferguson has recently declared “the old Fergie’s’ back”, after she was reunited with the royal family at her daughter Eugenie’s wedding in October. She was even pictured alongside Prince Philip, who was famously critical of the Duchess during her marriage to Prince Andrew, and would reportedly not share the same room as her. In the 2011 Oprah Winfrey documentary series “Finding Sarah: from royalty to the real world” the Duchess of York reveals how Prince Philip would call her behaviour “idiotic”.
In an extraordinary interview, Fergie talked with US TV personality Dr Phil, who is known for offering advice as a psychologist to guests on his talk show.
In footage from the session, she discusses the “toe-sucking” scandal, which saw her frozen out of the royal family in 1992 after pictures of her and her lover John Bryan appeared on newspaper front pages all over the world.
The Duchess is combative with Dr Phil at first and seems wary of opening up.
However, the host asks her why she thinks she does things to “self-sabotage”, like getting caught up in the scandal.
“I can’t get over the stupidity of me,” she replies.
“The first person who said it was my father-in-law”, she says, not naming Prince Philip.
She then claims he said: “For such a smart woman, why does she behave in such an idiotic way?”
“I’m not a stupid woman,” she reflects.
However, she acknowledges: “I eff it up all the time.”
Dr Phil agrees that she is not stupid and says her behaviour is emotional rather than intellectual.
“You’re addicted to approval and acceptance, and you’ll do anything to get it, including putting yourself in harm’s way,” he adds.
Throughout the mini-series Fergie has a series of frank chats with Oprah, starts a weight-loss regime and completes an Arctic trekking challenge.
This month, she has opened up about her struggles with her weight and the “self-hatred” that led her to comfort eating.
