Royal bridesmaids dresses: Style has changed through the years – but they must be white

THERE have been many royal weddings throughout the years, and on My Years With the Queen on ITV tonight, Lady Pamela Hicks looked back on her old bridesmaid dress.

Lady Pamela Hicks is the daughter of Lord Louis Mountbatten and the great great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria – making Pamela the cousin of Prince Philip and second to the Queen.

Lady Pamela is a widow to interior designer David Nightingale Hicks who died in 1998.

The couple were married for several years and had three children together, Edwina Victoria Hicks, Ashley Louis David Hicks and India Amanda Caroline Hicks.

At the age of just 13, India was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her godfather, Prince Charles, to Lady Diana Spencer.

Lady Pamela was also one of Her Majesty’s bridesmaids in 1947, before serving as her lady-in-waiting.

Looking back at special moments in her life, Lady Pamela and her daughter bought out their old bridesmaids dresses.

Speaking about her bridesmaid dress, Lady Pamela joked: “It looks so dirty, it should’ve been cleaned….It was so pretty when it was clean.”

Her daughter explained: “This is 73-years-old…it’s not the fact that it’s so old, it’s the fact that how timeless it is, because I think people would wear this now.

“Look how tiny your waist was.”

Comparing the two dresses side-by-side, she added: “I don’t mean to upstage your dress, but the 1980s is slightly upstaging yours.”

While all eyes are on the bride at weddings, bridesmaids also play a very important part.

Throughout the years, all of the royal bridesmaids have been dressed in white.

The pieces may vary in style and texture but royal tradition shows the bridesmaids wearing the same colour as the bride.

One of the most recent royal weddings was Meghan Markle and Harry’s in 2018.

The Duchess had a total of ten bridesmaids including Kate and William’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, who was a flower girl.

The beautiful white frock was custom-made by Givenchy designer Clare Waight Keller.

It featured a sequin belt with a tulle underlay and kept in tradition with the colour.

Princess Charlotte also stole the show at her auntie Pippa Middleton’s wedding in 2017.

The Duchess wore a beautiful cream frock with a pretty pink ribbon detail around the waste.

The Pepa & Company piece featured a frilly neckline and matched her flower crown.
