Royal aide at centre of race row predicted Meghan and Harry’s marriage ‘will end in tears’

Lady Susan Hussey – one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting and Prince William’s godmother is reported to have predicted the end of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s marriage before it had begun, telling listeners to “mark my words”.

Ms Fulani posted a transcript of the conversation on Twitter, claiming that Lady Hussey also said: “I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you’re from. When did you first come here?”

The charity worker responded “I am a British national, my parents came here in the 1950s” before Lady Hussey replied: “Oh, I knew we’d get there in the end, you’re Caribbean.”

Ms Fulani then said: “No, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent, and British nationality.”

Buckingham Palace released a statement condemning the “unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments” and confirmed that Lady Hussey has “stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect.”

Meghan and Prince Harry ‘starting to get nervous’ over couple’s ‘longevity in Hollywood’

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have begun to grow “nervous over their longevity in Hollywood,” according to former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown.

Lady Hussey has been an influential member of the Royal Family for decades, serving as a lady-in-waiting to the late Queen. She is also Prince William’s godmother.

When King Charles ascended to the throne, he decided to retain her as a royal courtier at Buckingham Palace. This decision came despite comments Lady Hussey had allegedly made about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

In Tom Bower’s biography of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, published in July, he wrote that Lady Hussey did not approve of the Sussexes as a couple. He even claimed that the royal aide predicted Harry and Meghan’s marriage will “end in tears”.

In the biography titled Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, Mr Bower wrote: “In London, Lady Susan Hussey had shortly before [New Year] enjoyed lunch with a group of theatre executives and directors.

“While discussing the possibility that Meghan might become associated with the National Theatre after the wedding, Hussey became unexpectedly serious about the couple’s future. ‘That will all end in tears,’ warned Hussey. ‘Mark my words.'”

Mr Bower also says in his book that Lady Hussey was one of the royal staff asked to help Meghan adjust to royal life. But during her interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, the Duchess of Sussex gave a different version of events, claiming she was left unprepared for the expectations that came with being a royal.

She said: “I didn’t fully understand what the job was: What does it mean to be a working royal? What do you do? What does that mean?

“[Harry] and I were very aligned on our cause-driven work. That was part of our initial connection.

“But there was no way to understand what the day-to-day was going to be like, and it’s so different because I didn’t romanticise any element of it.”

Lady Hussey’s alleged comments and subsequent departure from the royal household this week will once again bring the Royal Family’s approach to issues relating to race under the spotlight.

During the Oprah interview last year, Meghan also alleged that a senior member of the Royal Family raised concerns over how dark her son Archie’s skin colour would be when he was born.

The Duchess described how there were “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born” and refused to disclose who was involved in these conversations as it would be “very damaging to them.”

Following the interview, Buckingham Palace released a statement that said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
