While Edward reminisced on early memories of his mother, Sophie made the revelation about their daughter.
She said: “Louise had no concept, really, that the Queen and her grandmother were one and the same person.
“It wasn’t until she was at school where other children were mentioning and saying ‘Your grandmother’s the Queen.’
“She’d come home and say ‘Mummy, they say that Grandmama is the Queen.’
“And I said ‘yes’ and she said ‘I don’t understand what they mean.’”
Thought to be her “favourite grandchild”, the monarch previously allowed Lady Louise, to sneak a peek at Queen Victoria’s Highland art pieces.
The teenager is said to have something of an artistic flair and, the Queen taking note of this, showed her some of the family’s most treasured items.
They said: “Because of her obvious artistic skill, the Queen allowed Louise to look through some of the collection of Queen Victoria’s Highlands sketches which are kept at Balmoral but are rarely dug out these days.”
Speaking to The Sun in 2019, they added: “The Queen loves the fact that Louise and James relish their time at Balmoral, and she has become particularly close to Louise, who seems to have become her favourite grandchild, closely followed by James.
“Louise loves drawing and sketching and was very patiently trying to get Charlotte to do pictures of rabbits and deer.”
Queen Victoria is Britain’s second-longest reigning monarch, having been surpassed by Elizabeth II in 2015.
Louise is the Queen’s seventh-born grandchild and 15th in line of succession to the throne.
