Queen’s ‘favourite grandchild’ Lady Louise ‘didn’t know she was monarch’

THE QUEEN’s “favourite grandchild”, Lady Louise Windsor, had no idea her grandmother was the reigning monarch when she was younger, her mother Sophie, Countess of Wessex once revealed.

The young royal is the eldest child of Sophie, 56, and Prince Edward, 57, who have stepped up to support the Queen since Prince Philip’s death in April. Louise, 17, is entering her final year at St Mary’s School Ascot and is described as a “clever” girl. However, in her earlier years, Louise did not realise her grandmother and the Queen were the same person.

While Edward reminisced on early memories of his mother, Sophie made the revelation about their daughter.

She said: “Louise had no concept, really, that the Queen and her grandmother were one and the same person.

“It wasn’t until she was at school where other children were mentioning and saying ‘Your grandmother’s the Queen.’

“She’d come home and say ‘Mummy, they say that Grandmama is the Queen.’

“And I said ‘yes’ and she said ‘I don’t understand what they mean.’”

Thought to be her “favourite grandchild”, the monarch previously allowed Lady Louise, to sneak a peek at Queen Victoria’s Highland art pieces.

The teenager is said to have something of an artistic flair and, the Queen taking note of this, showed her some of the family’s most treasured items.

They said: “Because of her obvious artistic skill, the Queen allowed Louise to look through some of the collection of Queen Victoria’s Highlands sketches which are kept at Balmoral but are rarely dug out these days.”

Speaking to The Sun in 2019, they added: “The Queen loves the fact that Louise and James relish their time at Balmoral, and she has become particularly close to Louise, who seems to have become her favourite grandchild, closely followed by James.

“Louise also endeared herself to everyone by looking after William and Kate’s children when they were up here.Sophie Wessex: The family pictured at Philip's funeral in April

Queen Victoria is Britain’s second-longest reigning monarch, having been surpassed by Elizabeth II in 2015.

Louise is the Queen’s seventh-born grandchild and 15th in line of succession to the throne.
