MEGHAN MARKLE and Prince Harry shocked the world last month when they announced they would “step back” from royal life. But according to royal sources, the Royal Family were disappointed in the couple’s decision, comparing it to “pressing the nuclear button”.
Meghan and Harry also expressed their wish to “become financially independent”, but also “to fully support” the Queen.
Following discussions dubbed the ‘Sandringham summit’, it emerged Harry and Meghan would not be able to continue with many of their royal duties.
Harry said in a later speech he had hoped to be able to continue to serve the Queen without public funding, but “that wasn’t possible”.
Some have described the couple’s choice to post the statement on Instagram as impulsive, after reports indicated senior royals – including the Queen – had not been informed prior to their shock decision.

According to the Daily Mail, a royal source compared the couple’s decision to “pressing the nuclear button”.
Another royal source told the publication their decision was “unfair” to the Queen.
They said: “It’s deeply unfair to the Queen who doesn’t deserve to be treated this way. It is a shoddy way to treat her.
“The family understands that they want to do something different and is perfectly willing to help them. People are just devastated.”

Although the Queen was said to be shocked by Harry and Meghan’s decision, the monarch’s statement on the issue was full of love for her grandson and his wife.
She said: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family.”
“I want to thank them all for their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.
“It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”
Following the announcement on social media, Meghan returned to baby Archie in Canada almost immediately.
Prince Harry joined shortly afterwards, and the family are expected to set up in Canada for the foreseeable future.
But with a busy year ahead for the Royal Family, the Queen has reportedly asked the couple to return to the UK for a special engagement.

For years the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have attended the Commonwealth service in Westminster with other members of the Royal Family.
This year the couple will reportedly be making the trip over to make their final round of official engagements, before finally saying goodbye to senior royal life.
Later in the year, it is not yet known if Meghan and Harry will attend the wedding of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
But the couple are expected to still attend some events like Trooping the Colour, as members of the Royal Family.
