Queen reveals close bond with Prince George and Princess Charlotte before royal baby birth
THE QUEEN has provided a rare glimpse into the close bond she shares with her great-grandchildren Prince George and Princess Charlotte in a documentary with Sir Richard Attenborough before Kate gives birth to the next royal baby.
Her Majesty revealed a cheekier side of Prince George and Princess Charlotte as she spoke on Sir David Attenborough’s upcoming documentary The Queen’s Green Planet which airs later this month.
While speaking with Neil Turner, a senior attendant, about her beautiful Christmas tree, the Queen said: “It’s an interesting fat one isn’t it?”
When Mr Turner tells Her Majesty he painstakingly decorated the tree, the monarch replied: “Yes, that is always the problem, is the children love knocking those decorations off.
“Well my great-grandchildren do, anyway they enjoy themselves. And the great thing is to make them decorate it and they’re a bit more careful.
“It always looks jolly.”
The documentary shows the sovereign laughing and trading dry observations on modern life with Mr Attenborough and fellow 91-year-old while escorting him around Buckingham Palace’s garden.
At one stage when they were interrupted by the sound of a helicopter, the Queen joked: “Sounds like President Trump, or President Obama.”
The pair were filmed wandering the 40-acre garden in an unscripted 90-minute tour as part of the ITV programme about the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy.
The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy was the idea of Labour MP Frank Field, who found successive governments lukewarm about it until the monarch supported the project.
So far 40 Commonwealth countries have created a Queen’s Canopy, with 13 still to act.
Filmmaker Jane Treays said of the programme: “I was aware I was working with the two most consummate professionals on the planet.”
She admitted the experience exceeded even her expectations, adding: “It was probably the most magical afternoon of my career.”
Like many a pensioner, the pair are recorded complaining about health and safety and attempts to prevent children playing conkers.
During another humorous moment the head of state spots a young sapling bent over and quips: “That one we won’t look at because it doesn’t seem to be doing very well.”
Speaking to someone off camera “Are you sure that’s meant to be like that?” she says to someone off camera, adding: “Somebody sat on it I think, at the garden party.”
Well my great-grandchildren do, anyway they enjoy themselves
The documentary comes as Prince William revealed Kate is due to give birth “any minute now”.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have already an official page set up on the Royal Family’s website the arrival of Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s new sibling imminent.
Kate has taken time off from her royal duties after attending her last official engagement on March 22 before the birth as her final month of pregnancy with royal baby number three.
