Queen ‘pushed away’ Kate Winslet’s handshake when actress received CBE

The Queen swiftly ended a conversation with Kate Winslet by pushing away her handshake when she collected her CBE, the actress once recalled on a talk show.

Mrs Winslet told Deadline: “I would love to play her again; I absolutely believe there’s more chapters to her story.

“However, just because the story has touched people that doesn’t necessarily mean creatively we can do it again.

“But it doesn’t mean closing doors; we’re opening doors, exploring what’s behind the doors.”

In 2012, when collecting a very different award – a CBE at Buckingham Palace – the Queen subtly intimated that their conversation was over by pushing away Ms Winslet’s hand, according to the actress.

When appearing on the Graham Norton show in 2019 Ms Winslet recalled: “She did this most extraordinary thing.

“First of all, she’s got the most incredible skin and beautiful bouncy hair.

“Of course, there is a system and she is very well rehearsed and very well practised at this.

“You are told what to do and you step forwards and curtsy or bow or whatever fumble, terrible thing I probably did.

“And then you put out your hand to shake it and she sort of gives you this suggestive nudge backwards, like ‘you’re done, that’s it. Go back again.’

“I was like oh okay, I wasn’t expecting that.”

Ms Winslet, who has seven Oscars nominations, including a win in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role category for her performance in 2008’s The Reader, claimed the royal encounter was “incomparably overwhelming.”

When Graham Norton prompted the actress to reveal her conversation with the monarch, Ms Winslet recounted: “She said ‘congratulations on all your achievements’.

“She said ‘you are a mother aren’t you?’

“And I said yes, and she said ‘well that is the only job.’

“And I thought ‘good lady’. I was really, really touched that she said that.”

Mr Norton wittingly interjected, making a pushing motion and said: “And then she went ‘better get back to it!’”

Ms Winslet has three children, Mia, Joe and Bare Blaze, from three marriages and says she is the type of mother who enjoys packing lunches and doing the school run.

Indeed, it was the love of family that ultimately drew the British actress to the role of Mare, who attempts to navigate the suicide of her son and subsequent unravelling of her home life whilst solving a high profile murder case.

Ms Winslet told Deadline: “At the end of the day, when the chips are down, it’s community and family and the sense of belonging, no matter where you come from, that means everything — especially at a time when we’ve experienced this seismic event in the pandemic.

“I think [the miniseries] has that sense of looking out for one another against all odds; it’s something that everyone can relate to.

“This woman who dealt with this palpable grief, trying to get through each day; she put everyone else first

“She puts herself absolutely last.

“Even though she makes reprehensible choices through the series, we ultimately forgive her for those mistakes because of how compassionate she is — it was a huge juggling act from Day 1.”
