Queen forced to sell own socks in ‘bizarre’ scheme to ‘plug’ giant Royal Family cash hole

THE QUEEN has resorted to selling off personal items as a bid to “plug” the million-pound hole left in the Royal Family’s finances by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a royal commentator.

The Queen’s own socks are one item on the list of new purchases available on the Royal Collection website. Daily Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers joined ITV’s Lorraine Kelly to discuss the “bizarre” news. This venture comes after the 2019-20 report of the royal finances revealed a significant shortfall for the monarchy.

Mr Myers told viewers: “This is absolutely bizarre this story.

“If you wanted a pair of the Queen’s socks, you don’t necessarily have to break into Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle right now.

“They need to plug the £64 million gap in the finances because there are no tourists at the Palaces.

“I can reveal that Royal Collection has come up with a few handy gifts for you to pass on.”

The commentator continued: “You can buy a pair of the Queen’s socks for £69 a pair.

“I’m not even sure if they look that nice, to be honest with you.

“You can also have a hot water bottle, but only the cover for the hot water bottle.

“This is coming in at £115!”

Ms Kelly interjected: “And you don’t even get the hot water bottle? You just get the cover?”

Mr Myers confirmed: “You don’t even get the hot water bottle.

“However there is something slightly cheaper, and maybe you might like this Lorraine for little Angus.”

He added: “You can buy a dog bandana for £12.95. Look at that, how lovely.”

The ITV host joked: “By royal appointment. That looks not too bad at all.”

The bandanna displayed was red with a green square that had ‘Buckingham Palace’ written in gold lettering.

The hot water bottle cover was listed as a “silver cable knit hot water bottle” while the socks were described as “natural cable knit bed socks”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk last year, expert Richard Fitzwilliams said: “There will be a very substantial shortfall in the Buckingham Palace accounts.

“The expectation is that that will be met, so far as is possible, by various ‘efforts and efficiencies’, according to their own briefing.

“Broadly speaking, the anticipation is that the Palace will be some £35million short, but they won’t be asking for extra public money.

“Property rentals and facility management are part of the royal accounts that bring in £17.8million.”
