Queen disapproved of ‘frivolous displays of wealth’ by holidaying William and Kate

THE QUEEN is believed to have disapproved of Kate Middleton’s luxury lifestyle before she entered the royal family, an expert has said.

Before she married Prince William in 2011, Kate enjoyed many expensive holidays including several trips on the Caribbean Island of Mustique with her family. However, the Queen was reportedly concerned about Kate’s “frivolous displays of wealth” while on holiday.

In her 2010 book William and Harry, Royal expert Katie Nicholl said Her Majesty found the outings “unpalatable”.

She wrote: “If she was not with William at Balmoral then the couple were skiing or holidaying on Mustique.

“Kate was there so often the press dubbed her ‘Queen of Mustique’, a title that had previously belonged to Princess Margaret.

“Britain was now in a recession and such frivolous displays of wealth were unpalatable to the Queen.

“While the rest of the world speculated that an engagement was on the horizon for William and Kate, the Queen believed an announcement should be postponed until Kate was settled in a career.”

Mustique is part of the Grenadine island chain in the Caribbean and is owned by a private company housing around 120 private villas.

A royal source told Ms Nicholl: “It is Her Majesty’s opinion that if Kate is one day going to be William’s consort, then she needs a proper job.

“Swanning from one five-star holiday resort to another is not the prerequisite for a young woman possibly destined to be Queen.”

This year, due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have decided not to holiday abroad.

Instead the couple took their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to the Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast.

This is the second consecutive year the family have opted for a summer staycation in the UK.

According to Royal author Marcia Moody, Mustique holds a special place for the couple as it helps them keep out of the public eye.

In her 2013 book “Kate”, she said: “The Caribbean island had become a favourite with the Middletons thanks to its old-fashioned charm – and the fact that it is totally private.”
