Queen Camilla: Britons back title for King Charles’s wife – ‘Earned her place!’

Clarence House once insisted Camilla would be known as Princess Consort when Charles was King.

Some 56 percent of 18-34-year-olds said yes compared to 67 percent of over 64s.

Men and women were broadly in agreement, with 61 percent of males respondents and 64 percent of females saying yes.

Labour voters were less likely to say yes than Tory supporters, at 58 percent and 73 percent respectively.

It was an issue Remainers and Brexiteers were largely agreed with 64 percent of Remain-backers and 67 percent of Leavers being happy with the title Queen Camilla.

It comes after the late monarch used her Platinum Jubilee to pave the way for Camilla to be Queen Consort.

Commenting on the poll results, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said: “This is a sign that over the years the public has warmed to Camilla.

“It is also easier which, in the age of the sound bite, counts for a lot.

“Also, the reasons that Queen Consort Camilla said she originally wanted to be known as the Duchess of Cornwall not Princess of Wales and would also take the title Princess Consort when Charles became King were to pacify those who felt strongly about issues linked to Diana. A few probably do, but now it’s a small minority.

“What makes sense is to handle matters such as titles sensitively and the Queen’s wish, expressed on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee, that the Duchess of Cornwall be known as Queen Consort was brilliantly timed.

Thomas Mace-Archer-Mills, founder of the British Monarchists Society, said the poll shows Camilla is being recognised by the public for the “way in which she has executed her duties within the Royal Family over the past 17 years”.

He said: “Despite what personal feelings people have of our new Queen in regard to the past, time has changed as we have moved on as a nation.

“This poll certainly shows that Camilla has earned her place within the institution, the Royal Family, and the nation.

“It is time we gave Camilla our due respect and understanding of her role and this should be enough for her to be referred to as Queen Camilla.”

It comes after the late monarch used her Platinum Jubilee message to the nation in February to back Charles’s wife as Queen Consort in a major intervention shaping the future of the Royal Family.

The head of state said in the written message: “I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support.

“I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me.

“And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

When the couple married in 2005, Clarence House insisted she would be known as Princess Consort.

At the time, Camilla was blamed for the breakdown of Charles’s marriage to Princess Diana.

A revamp of Charles’s website in 2018 saw any mention of “Princess Consort” removed.

Meanwhile, a separate poll by Techne UK for Express.co.uk found the majority of Brits support having a bank holiday named in honour of the late Queen.

Techne UK polled 1,624 British adults from September 21-22.
