Princess Margaret’s anger at Peter Sellers over affair claims: ‘Banished him!’

PRINCESS MARGARET became so frustrated with iconic film star and comedian Peter Sellers, after he made claims of an affair with the royal, that she “banished him from her company”, unearthed accounts reveal.

From the saddening tales of how the Queen and her sister Margaret’s father George VI died, to the breakdown in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship, royal fans have become infatuated with Peter Morgan’s masterpiece.

Margaret was known for her party-loving escapades, and her love life became the topic of fierce speculation, particularly after she was refused permission to marry Group Captain Peter Townsend.

Peter was a divorced man, and protocol stated that she was not allowed to wed someone who separated from their wife.

She soon married photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960, with the Queen making her new husband the Earl of Snowdon.

But while Lord Snowdon would go on trips abroad, during which he “never wrote to his wife and seldom phoned”, Margaret’s attention began to move elsewhere.

According to the Amazon Prime documentary Princess Margaret: Her Real Life Story, Margaret “found herself alone in her palace, and scorned”.

This, the documentary’s narrator and director Michael Dean noted, was because she was “used to constant admiration and attention from men”.

He added: “It was inevitable she would look elsewhere for excitement and love, and she found it.”

Among her reported romances while married to Lord Snowdon, Mr Dean explained, was Sellers – an actor famed for his roles in the Pink Panther franchise.

After Margaret stopped her affair with Robin Douglas-Home, nephew of the former Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Margaret “continued to mix with unsuitable men”.

But, Mr Dean continued, “not all were as indiscreet” as Sellers.

He said: “A notoriously unreliable witness to his own love life, Sellers confessed to being infatuated with Margaret. But his story of an alleged affair with her changed with every telling.

“And she soon banished him from her company.”

Margaret’s relationship with Robin “came to an abrupt end” when Lord Snowdon found out about the affair, which began in 1966.

The narrator noted that “rather than risk divorce”, Margaret sent a letter to Robin “saying she would attempt a reconciliation with her husband”.

Mr Dean added that “18 months later Robin, who had a history of depression” would kill himself.

Craig Brown, an unauthorised biographer of Margaret’s, assessed how Robin “properly loved” the Queen’s sister and that this affection was reciprocated as “she properly loved him”.

His comments came in 2018, when reported love letters between the two were released, shining an insight into the feeling the pair had for each other.

Margaret reportedly ended the affair after six months, Anne De Courcy, a biographer of Lord Snowdon – also referred to as Tony – claimed three years ago.

She said: “Tony found out and furiously told her that man is not coming to Kensington Palace again and she wrote him a letter saying I must not see you again.”

In one of the last correspondence between the two, the Princess wrote to her love: “Thank you for everything nice, which everything was.”

Lord Snowdon and Margaret’s marriage would end in divorce after the royal’s affair with Roddy Llewellyn went public in 1978.

Ms De Courcy added: “They were both pretty strong-willed and accustomed to having their own way, so there were bound to be collisions.

“She expected her husband to be with her more, but one of Tony’s strongest motivations was work.”
