Princess Diana’s ‘storybook moment’ orchestrated by US First Lady Nancy Reagan


PRINCESS Diana was approached by John Travolta after the former First Lady revealed Diana’s ‘fantasy’ was to dance with the Hollywood star.

“Nancy Reagan tapped on my shoulder and said, ‘The princess, her fantasy is to dance with you. Would you like to dance with her tonight?’, and I said ‘Well of course.'”

“My heart starts to race and I tap her on the shoulder and she turns around and she looks at me and does that kind of bashful dip she did, and she looked up at me and  I said ‘Would you care to dance with me?’.

He later revealed that the “whole room cleared” and that the pair danced for 15 minutes.

The Grease and Saturday Night Fever star had been invited to attend an evening gala at the White House to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The couple had arrived in the United States in 1985 for a four-day visit, where they were greeted by the President and First Lady.

President Ronald Reagan hosted the evening reception to mark their first night in Washington and invited a host of celebrities and officials to greet the young couple.

Hollywood names that attended the gala along with John Travolta included Clint Eastwood, Tom Selleck, and Neil Diamond.

Over the course of their visit, the Prince and Princess of Wales participated in a number of engagements.

Princess Diana visited a hospice, whilst Prince Charles viewed the Treaty of 1812 and the National Gallery of Art.

They both participated in a polo match in Florida and attended a service at Washington Cathedral.

hilst the couple displayed a united front for the public, their marriage was already in difficulties.

In later interviews with Martin Bashir and Andrew Morton, Princess Diana revealed that following the birth of Prince Harry in 1984, their marriage had gone “down the drain”.

The couple separated in 1992 after both parties admitted infidelity and they finalised their divorce in 1996.

Princess Diana tragically died in 1997 following a car accident in Paris. Her sudden death at the age of 36 caused unprecedented widespread mourning, with over a million people lining the streets of London for her funeral.
