Princess Diana’s final resting place made public by ex-bodyguard ‘Immensely emotional’

PRINCESS Diana’s ex-bodyguard Colin Tebbutt said that he felt “immensely emotional” at her funeral in Althorp Park with her butler, Paul Burrell.

Colin Tebbutt claimed that Princess Diana’s funeral at Althorp Park was attended by very close family members and her butler Paul Burrell. The Army put a bridge across the island to carry the casket and buried it in the centre of the Oval lake. Speaking to the Channel 5 documentary, Secrets of Royal Palaces, Mr Tebbutt said that the family funeral was “immensely emotional’ and “difficult to take in”.

Colin Tebbutt MVO, Member of the Victorian Order & former Royal Protection Officer, said:“The army put a bridge across to the island and the army walked across the bridge carrying her royal highness on their shoulders and lowered into where she was being buried.

“The family then did what everybody does at a family funeral and went to the edge.

“I stood back with Paul, and then there were prayers said.

“To be included with the household, the two of us, with that very last bit of burial of the boss been lowered, And you know, I have never really grafted. It has always been, did it really happen to me.”

“Immensely emotional, Immensely emotional.

“Difficult to take in.”

As per sources the original plan to bury Princess Diana’s casket was in the family vault at the local church in Great Brighton.

However, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer objected to it as he was concerned about the public safety and security.

He wanted his sister’s grave to be buried at the Spencer’s family home, Althorp Park where it can be taken care of and visited by her sons in peace away from the media.

During the interview with the Northants Evening Telegraph and its sister paper the Chronicle and Echo in 1998, Charles Spencer opened about the burial plans for his sister.

He said: “I had been uncomfortable with the idea of the crypt and one morning I just woke and thought ‘We’ll bury her on the estate’. I talked it over with a couple of other people and we went from there.

“The joy of that place is its natural beauty with its trees and plants. We are doing a lot of landscaping work in the park and around the temple and our personal memorial to Diana is transforming that site.

“It is also appropriate because water was her element – she was always very at home in it.”

The actual area of the burial place is known as The Oval within the Park’s Pleasure Garden with an arboretum containing trees planted by Prince William, Prince Harry and the Princess herself.

It contains two marble slabs with inscriptions and profile of Diana with Diana’s quote and Lord Spencer’s forthright funeral speech.

Charles Spencer intend to keep the island private with no particular marking of Princess Diana’s burial place.

Althorp Park is the Spencer’s estate with Spencer Chapel which also included Princess Diana’s father coffin with other members of their family.
