Princess Diana’s divorce from Charles was ‘hell’ claims royal biographer – ‘In pieces’

PRINCESS DIANA described her divorce to Prince Charles as “hell”, according to a royal biographer.

After 15 years of marriage and having Prince William and Prince Harry, the Prince and Princess of Wales divorced in 1996. Diana infamously said to the BBC’s Martin Bashir there was “three of us” in her ill-fated marriage to Charles, but a royal expert has said the late royal struggled with separating from her husband.

Ingrid Seward shared in an article Diana felt unsafe following her divorce from Charles.

In 1997, the biographer was invited by the Princess for a “girlie chat” where Diana shared: “The divorce was hell.

“I was in pieces. I didn’t feel safe anywhere.

“I know it sounds silly now but I really did worry about the brakes on my car . . .”

Writing in The Sun on Sunday, Ms Seward said the Princess “trailed off into a giggle” after making the ominous comment.

The biographer then claimed: “(Diana) even thought Prince Charles wanted her out of the way and had penned a note saying as much and even suggested Camilla was a decoy and he wanted the way clear to marry their children’s nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

“But now a year later she knew all her fears sounded silly and she was full of life and vivacious, positive and at ease. By nature, she was an incredibly insecure person.

“It was one of her greatest problems — she would never outgrow the habit of dropping her eyes when she spoke in her silvery, little-girl voice, but she seemed more at ease with herself.”

Ms Seward also wrote Diana was sad her marriage did not work out, and said the Princess insisted “Charles absolutely loved me”.

The Princess believed if she and Charles had met at different times they would have “conquered” the world, and added: “He loved me when we got married and I loved him.

“We still love each other now, in a different way. At least I love him.

“He is a good person. It is incredibly sad about our marriage.”

But the Princess also said: “It was the people around us.

“They didn’t give us a chance. Charles is surrounded by the wrong people giving the wrong advice and he’s very unfulfilled and he really doesn’t do enough.”

It comes ahead of what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday on July 1, with her sons set to pay tribute to their late mother.

Both Prince Harry and Prince William will unveil a stature of Diana at Kensington Palace.

However, a source told The Sun: “Charles will leave the boys to it.

“Harry will need to quarantine for at least five days when he lands in England, most likely at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.”
