Princess Diana ‘so present’ as year of tributes begin ahead of 25th anniversary

PRINCESS Diana is “certainly not forgotten” claims royal expert, as film portrayals and public memories indicate her enduring legacy ahead of the 25th anniversary of her tragic death.

Princess Diana’s influence on modern-day culture continues to be “so prevalent”, according to two royal commentators. With an upcoming film, a musical and another season of The Crown expected in the next few months, royal expert Rachel Bowie said royal fans are “embarking on a year of tributes” ahead of the “milestone anniversary” which will mark 25 years since she passed away on August 31, 1997.

“Obviously, we have the statue, the Spencer film coming up, the Diana musical, there are so many Diana documentaries to honour her, do you feel like Diana’s more alive than ever?

“She’s so up the zeitgeist right now and she still feels so present in our every day.”

Co-host Roberta Fiorito continued: “So present, it’s interesting because you look at all the social media tributes and everything, her life, and legacy, and maybe we’re just so in the leads with royal stuff but I even see all these things like the Royally Obsessed Instagram account saying ‘Gone but not forgotten.

“She’s certainly not forgotten, I feel like more than ever, seeing three iterations of her in Kristen Stewart, in Elizabeth Debicki, and Emma Corrin, I just think that as other people personify her, it’s so prevalent to today.”

Spencer, the most recent film to be focused on the late Princess, premiered at Venice Film Festival on September 3, 2021.

Directed by Pablo Larrain and starring Kirsten Stewart as Princess Diana, the film focuses on a 3-day period in 1992 when the Prince and Princess of Wales decide to end their marriage.

The film has been met with rave reviews, with the biographical psychological drama being tipped for a slew of Oscar nominations.

Season five of the critically acclaimed Netflix series The Crown is also currently in production and is expected to be available for streaming in 2022.

Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has been cast to takeover the role, which was previously played by Emma Corrin.

Alongside these adaptations, a musical is set to open on Broadway in November, which covers the life of the late Princess. The musical has also been filmed by Netflix and will premiere on October 1, 2021.

Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. She and her new partner Dodi Fayed had been relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi and their driver eventually lost control of their vehicle.

Over a million bouquets of flowers were left outside her home at Kensington Palace and an estimated 2.5 billion people watched her televised funeral service.

Ahead of the 10th anniversary of her death, Prince William and Prince Harry organised a charity benefit concert to be broadcasted, which was aimed to raise money for Diana’s charities.

Whilst there are no current plans for the 25th anniversary next year, the brothers recently reunited to unveil a statue of Diana at Kensington Palace.

Placed in the Sunken Garden, the brothers had commissioned the statue to commemorate what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday.
