It was thanks to Diana that things changed, as she made sure she was involved in her children’s lives as much as possible.
Angela Levin, author of ‘Harry: A Biography of a Prince’, told CBS News in 2015: “Diana broke all the rules of traditional royal child-rearing.
“Even dropping her boys off at school herself.
Princess Diana made Prince William cry in front of friends: ‘Her temper snapped!’
“That was unheard of in Prince Charles’ day.”
Diana had a very close relationship with both her children, but she was also known to be incredibly strict with them.
According to a newly-resurfaced report by the Daily Express, the Princess of Wales gave a wilful Prince William a public smacking at his school on sports day, after the future King misbehaved.
Her temper reportedly snapped when an seven-year-old William ran away as she was about to leave after the events had ended.
Royal correspondent Ashley Walton wrote in 1990: “Her temper snapped when he ran away as she was about to leave after the events had ended.

“Diana – clearly angry – dashed 100 yards, caught him by the arm and have him a firm smack on the bottom.
“William burst into tears.
“He was pushed back into the back of the royal car after a good telling off and driven back to Kensington Palace.”
According to the same report, Princess Anne did the same thing when she publicly smacked her son, Peter, then seven, on the bottom at the Badminton Horse Trials.
Diana was reportedly incredibly serious about discipline and she is also said to have sacked William and Harry’s first nanny, Barbara Barnes, because she was too soft on them.
More than 30 people reportedly left the service of Charles and Diana in the five years following their marriage.
Speaking to Yahoo’s Royal Box, royal historian Louise Heren said: “Some nannies do spill the beans. Nannies are sometimes sacked for inappropriate behaviour, getting too close to the children.

“That close bond between the children and the nanny when it extends into adulthood can go as far as we’ve recently seen.”
Royal expert Victoria Arbiter added: “A royal nanny is about the most intimate position you can have in working for the royal family because they’re there for everything at the centre of the family.
“William and Harry stayed close to all their nannies.”
She noted: “The thing that’s tricky too is when you become a royal nanny you are somewhat giving up your own existence.
“The nannies that looked after William and Harry were either widows or never married so there is as well trying to find the right person who is going to fit the mould, who will be discreet.
“Also who will put your child’s wellbeing at the centre of their existence but is also happy to give up a huge part of their own life.”
