Princess Charlotte title: The THREE occasions which will see Charlotte’s title change

1405

PRINCESS CHARLOTTE was granted her Princess title by the Queen, but her royal title is likely to change on three occasions in the future – here’s why.

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge’s only daughter, Princess Charlotte, is known formally as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. The six-year-old’s title incorporates Cambridge because her father is the Duke of Cambridge. But in the future, Charlotte’s royal title could undergo many changes.

How will Charlotte’s title change when Prince Charles is King?

When Prince Charles is King, it stands to reason that his eldest son Prince William will become the Prince of Wales.

The Prince of Wales title is not automatic, but it is traditionally bestowed on the monarch’s eldest son.

Prince William will likely be known as the Prince of Wales rather than the Duke of Cambridge in this case.

But William will not be the only person to undergo a royal title change when Prince Charles is King.

William’s wife Kate will likely become Catherine, Princess of Wales, the same style held by her late mother-in-law Diana, Princess of Wales.

The couple’s three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, will also undergo a royal title change.

Therefore Princess Charlotte will likely be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Wales.

How will Charlotte’s title change when Prince William is King?

Prince William is second in line to the throne and is therefore expected to be King one day.

When he is King, he will likely award the Prince of Wales title to his eldest son and heir, Prince George.

William may also decide to award Princess Charlotte with the Princess Royal title.

The Princess Royal title has traditionally been given to the monarch’s eldest daughter in recent centuries.

The current Princess Royal is Princess Anne, the only daughter of the Queen and her late husband Prince Philip.

Royal expert and author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, Duncan Larcombe, told TownandCountrymag.com: “The title of Princess Royal is traditionally bestowed on the eldest daughter of the monarch.

“It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the death of the current Princess Royal.”

If Princess Charlotte decides to marry one day, she may also receive a new title.

The monarch traditionally bestows a new royal title to family members to mark their weddings.

Charlotte could take on a Duchess or Countess title in this case.
