A CLOSE friend of Princess Charlene of Monaco has said she is a “tough cookie” and that she is not a “shrinking violet” as the Princess prepares to head home after her recent health scare.

Charlene, 43, has admitted to PEOPLE that the past year has been “trying” due to a number of health issues she has faced. The Princess travelled to South Africa in mid-May but soon after arriving in the country, she began to experience complications following a sinus lift and bone graft procedure which she had undergone prior to her trip away.

Both of these procedures had been undergone in preparation for dental implants which were due to take place soon after the Princess returned home.

But due to the complications faced, the Princess had been forced to miss her 10th wedding anniversary with Prince Albert on 1 July.

From this, Charlene has had to rely on the use of FaceTime to speak with her family, causing a tough few months away from them.

In an interview with PEOPLE, a friend of the royals said: “Just to be honest, Charlene, she’s an Olympian, and she’s a tough cookie.”

The friend praised the charity work Charlene has been doing in her role as a royal, saying that it’s is her passion.

The friend said: “She cares about saving the rhinoceroses and about teaching kids to swim.

“She doesn’t want to be Kate [Middleton], and she doesn’t want to be Grace Kelly.

“It was just Charlene being Charlene.”

The friend continued: “She’s a little bit of an iconoclast. She’s her own person, and she’s not a shrinking violet.”

Prince Albert, the husband of Princess Charlene, has also praised the Princess and told PEOPLE that she is “ready to come home” following her lengthy spell away from her family.

Prince Albert said: “She’s jokingly said that she’s ready to stowaway on a ship to come back to Europe.”

One of the main influences for Charlene’s return to normal life has been the hands-on parenting which she has missed with her 6-year-old twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, something which the close friend of the royals say she takes great pride in.

“The kids are so overwhelmingly charming and loving,” the close friend of the royals explained.

The close friend emphasised the importance that Prince Albert has been in the life of Princess Charlene and her family, saying he is “such a good dad” to the twins.

The friend continued: “He’s so good with them. And she’s such a good mom.

“I think that’s where the confluence is — that they’re wonderful parents.”

But Prince Albert could not hide how much he has missed the Princess in his most recent interview with PEOPLE as he said: “I’m looking forward to Charlene being back.

“Looking forward to her being back because she’s part of my life, part of our lives, part of life in Monaco.”
