Prince William will be at the FA Cup Final on the day of the ROYAL WEDDING
Prince William will attend the FA Cup Final on Prince Harry’s wedding day by making a mad dash from Windsor to Wembley and back, say FA sources.
Football chiefs met last week to discuss how the second-in-line to the throne, who is expected to be Harry’s best man when he marries Meghan Markle on May 19, can still present the coveted trophy later that afternoon.
An insider revealed: “The plan is for Prince William to be there. Because the couple are getting married at noon and then not reconvening until later in the evening, there is time for William to make the 5.30pm kick off, and present the trophy before returning to Windsor, probably by helicopter to ensure that he doesn’t miss anything. As far as the FA is concerned, he’s going to be at the FA Cup final.”
Kensington Palace has so far refused to confirm that William will make the crunch match, merely pointing out that the two events “will not clash”.
A spokesman did not respond to a request for comment last night. William, 35, is president of the FA and usually attends the Wembley showpiece, handing the historic silver cup to the winning team.
But this year’s event is logistically challenging because he will be attending Harry and Meghan’s wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, 20 miles away.
Thankfully the couple have decided that their day will be a “game of two halves”, with a lunchtime reception for 600, followed by a long break in the afternoon before an intimate evening reception for 200 guests at Frogmore House.
If the later event doesn’t start before 8pm then William will be able to make it in time, with the use of a chopper or a police escort.
Pubs will be allowed to stay open late on May 18 and 19 so revellers can enjoy both the royal wedding and the cup final.
Last month, Home Secretary Amber Rudd confirmed that pubs, bars and and other licensed premises will be allowed to keep serving until 1am, instead of the usual 11pm.
the Home Office said previous licensing hours extensions which have clashed with major football fixtures have not resulted in “increased disorder” reports.
The news comes as it emerges homeowners in Windsor are set to make thousands renting out their homes for the Royal Wedding.
Research by Airbnb has found that people living near Windsor Castle are marketing their properties for as much as £1,750 a night when Harry and Meghan tie the knot at St George’s Chapel on May 19.
The company, which provides an online marketplace for people to let out their homes on a short-term basis, says guest arrivals for that May weekend have risen by 194 per cent in Windsor, 362 per cent in Maidenhead and a staggering 1,438 per cent in Slough compared to the same period last year.
With the big day just five weeks away, listings on the Airbnb site include a three-bed Windsor town house with an asking price of £1,000 per night and a four-bedroom property in nearby Clewer priced at £1,750 a night.
