Prince William offers olive branch to Harry in bid to avoid open rift at Philip’s funeral

PRINCE WILLIAM has offered an olive branch to his younger Prince William ahead of Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday, a royal expert has claimed.

Commenting on this, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said William will also wear a suit to the funeral, to avoid a visible contrast between the two brothers.

He told the Sun: “This is obviously very sensitive.

“Anything that distinguished the brothers in that way, which would be so obvious for anyone watching, would probably be avoided.

“The whole thing we do not want is any form of rift.

“I’d suggest it would be handled in such a way as it goes totally smoothly without a hitch, and there are no issues.

“My opinion is that they would do everything possible to make sure that the spotlight on this very, very important day is where it should be, and that’s on truly remarkable achievements of someone with superhuman energy who did so much for Queen and country.”

Earlier this year, it was announced Harry would be stripped of his honorary military titles.

He no longer holds the positions of Captain-General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving.

As a result, he is no longer allowed to wear the corresponding uniforms at official events.

Harry is allowed to wear his medals, however.

Several members of the Royal Family could attend Philip’s funeral in regimental dress, including Prince William, Prince Charles and Prince Edward.

Prince Andrew, who stepped back from public life in 2019, is also set to wear a suit.

Buckingham Palace has yet to confirm the details of the funeral, they are due to do so later this week.

Mr Fitzwilliams said every detail will be planned to the smallest detail, including what guests will wear.

He said: “There has been no announcement at all on that, so as a result, we simply don’t know.

“But I’d suggest all these details are being thought out – down to the minutiae of them.

“There will not be a thing that isn’t thought of.”

Prince Philip’s funeral will take place at 3pm on Saturday, April 17.

The ceremony will be held at St George’s Chapel, on the grounds of Windsor Castle, and will be televised.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, just 30 people will be allowed to attend, socially distanced.

The list of guests has not yet been announced, though it has been confirmed Prince Harry will attend.
