Prince William made sure to include a tribute to Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge as he spoke to recipients of the award honouring Princess Diana’s legacy at his home. In footage from the event, the Duke can be seen sitting down on a light grey settee while speaking with award winner Hannah Hodgson. And in front of them on a coffee table, royal fans were quick to spot a copy of Hold Still, the photography book borne out of the Duchess of Cambridge’s collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery in the early months of the pandemic
Royal fans had previously spotted the book on the table during a meeting between Prince William and London Mayor Sadiq Khan in London.
Kate was heavily involved in the development of the photographic project, and personally met with some of the subjects of the book.
During a visit to Scotland in May, the Duchess of Cambridge met with five-year-old leukaemia patient Mila Sneddon, whose photo appeared in the book and had expressed a wish to meet a real princess wearing pink.
The nod to Kate happened as Prince William met with the winners of the International Legacy Award from around the world.
Prince Harry also met with recipients via video link.
The legacy awards were first introduced in 2017 to celebrate Diana’s humanitarian work on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of her death.
The Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex have been presenting the award every two years since its creation.
The event marked the first joint engagement conducted by the brothers since the unveiling of their mother’s commemorative statue at Kensington Palace in July.
Prince William and Prince Harry, who has been living in the United States since 2020, however, did not carry out the meeting in person.
The two have been dogged by persistent rumours of a feud, with the Duke of Sussex defining his relationship with his brother as “space.”
Speculation about the pair was further exacerbated after Prince Harry claimed both his brother and father were “trapped” in the Royal Family.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey in March, the Duke said: “I myself was trapped as well. I didn’t see a way out.
“I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped.”
Saying he was “trapped within the system like the rest of my family are”, Prince Harry added: “My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave.”
The royal added he had “huge compassion for that”.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex officially stepped down from the roles within the Royal Family in March 2020.
