PRINCE WILLIAM was in attendance at Aston Villa’s match against Chelsea, while a documentary commemorating Prince Philip’s life aired on BBC One.

The Duke of Cambridge has been outspoken in his support of Aston Villa. Pictures from Villa’s Carabao Cup match against Chelsea showed William in the stands cheering his team on. In the 64th minute of normal time, pictures show the royal roar with approval as the Villians equalised against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The match ended 1-1, with Chelsea and Aston Villa going to penalties.

In a dramatic shootout, Aston Villa missed two penalties before a Chelsea miss and penalty save allowed them back into the mix.

However, William’s Aston Villa missed their last spot kick, seeing them lose 4-3 on penalties to Chelsea.

Speaking to former footballer Peter Crouch on BBC Sounds’ ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’ in 2020, William said he was desperate not to be like his school friends in supporting Manchester United.

He said he became an Aston Villa fan at 11 years old, when he watched the side face Bolton in the FA Cup.

The Duke said at the time: “I sat there among all the Villa fans and I loved it. I thought the atmosphere was great.

“I felt a real connection with the club. I felt Villa was a very proud Midlands club and it felt very special.

“Only in the last few years have I got a grip of Villa as my real team and I watch them a lot and I get into the stats.”

William’s night in Stamford Bridge comes as BBC One aired a documentary commemorating the late Duke of Edinburgh.

Philip died on April 9 2021, just months before his 100th birthday, and was laid to rest on April 17 at Windsor Castle.

BBC’s ‘Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers’ features William share how much he “admired” his grandfather for “giving up his career” when he married Queen Elizabeth II.

He said on the programme: “One of the things I do admire him for is that he gave up a very successful military career to be the Queen’s consort and support her and to go into service and duty in a different way.”

After the BBC’s documentary on Philip aired, royal fans were touched by what they called a “lovely tribute”.

One Twitter user said: “I love this documentary. For the past hour I’ve been swept up in the tradition of the royals and the sense of pride I always felt when I watched them.

“I’ve forgotten all the negativity that is going on now. A lovely tribute.”

Another said: “Prince Phillip should be held in high regard, fought for our future, stood by his wife like a husband should.

“A credit to that family whatever you think about them as a whole.”
