He said: “I’ve never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her.”
Asked where this idea came from, he said: “I hazard a guess that it probably could have come from within the institution.”
However, William reportedly feels very strongly that Harry blindsided the Queen in an “insulting and disrespectful way”.
After the Sandringham Summit last year, when the so-called Megxit deal was hashed out, the pair went for a walk together to clear the air, but it did not go well.
Prince William feels like Harry did blindside the Queen
Prince Harry said in his Oprah interview he did not blindside the Queen
What had upset William most was Harry and Meghan’s surprise launch of their Sussex Royal website before the summit, which featured their preferred blueprint for the future.
Later, the Queen instructed them to no longer use the word royal, to which the pair responded publicly: “While there is not any jurisdiction by the monarchy… over the use of the word ‘royal’ overseas, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use Sussex Royal … or Royal… “
A senior royal told the Sunday Times: “The content and that it’s online is staggering.”
A source close to the Duke of Cambridge added: “That was it for William, he felt they’d blindsided the Queen in such an insulting and disrespectful way.”

They added that it was still at the forefront of William’s mind at the Commonwealth Day service last year, which was Meghan and Harry’s final engagement as working royals and the tension in the family was clear to see.
In the interview with Oprah, Harry argued that he could not have blindsided the Queen because he had discussed leaving the Royal Family with her several times over the course of two years.
Meghan claimed they even spoke to the Queen the night before the statement came out.
Harry said: “When we were in Canada, I had three conversations with my grandmother and two conversations with my father and ‒ before he stopped taking my calls ‒ and he said, ‘Can you put this all in writing what your plan is?’
“He asked me to put it in writing and I put all the specifics in there, even the fact that we were planning out putting the announcement out on January 7.”
This would indicate that the announcement did not necessarily surprise the Queen.
However, the royal insider told the Sunday Times that it was the Sussex Royal website with the blueprint wish list of what they wanted that had taken them by surprise, rather than the announcement itself.
Harry has now returned to the US after attending the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.
His chauffeur-driven car was spotted leaving the private terminal just minutes after the plane landed.
The vehicle was also seen arriving in Montecito, where Harry now lives with Meghan and their son Archie, at around 4pm.
Today is expected to be a difficult day for the Queen, as it is her first birthday without her beloved husband by her side.
Senior royals, including Princess Anne and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will visit the Queen via a rota system to ensure she is not on her own.
Prince Charles and Prince William are not expected to visit her face-to-face today.
