Prince Philip surprise: Duke and Queen’s presence at Beatrice’s wedding was a ‘real coup’

ROYAL fans were delighted to see the Queen and Prince Philip at Princess Beatrice’s secret royal wedding. One royal commentator has dubbed the couple’s attendance “the real coup”.

Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and Prince Philip, 98, have been isolating at Windsor Castle since March and their age makes them extremely vulnerable to COVID-19. Royal fans were stunned and delighted when the couple made a surprise appearance at their granddaughter Princess Beatrice’s secret wedding last Friday, July 17, which is believed to have been their first outing in months.

Princess Beatrice’s low-key Windsor wedding was something of a Royal Family reunion.

The ceremony was kept secret from the public until after it happened and was attended by no more than 20 guests, in keeping with Government guidelines.

Beatrice was due to marry Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on May 29 but the couple had to rearrange their plans after the pandemic made their original date impossible.

Beatrice scrapped her initial plan to tie the knot at St James’s Palace and opted to have the ceremony at All Saints Chapel in Windsor instead.

While Prince Andrew’s eldest daughter was always likely to have a low-key wedding many believed she would wait until next spring.

However, Beatrice’s big day is understood to have been timed so that the Queen and Philip could attend before heading to Balmoral early next month.

Only a few photos from the special day were shared, including one that shows the bride with her grandparents.

One royal commentator has described the Queen and Duke’s attendance as a royal publicity win.

Expert Richard Fitzwilliams told “The wedding of Princess Beatrice to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi at The Royal Chapel of All Saints at Windsor was certainly a surprise.

“It has been recorded for posterity by the release of a series of photographs which are enchanting.

“They were also in the unenviable position of having to postpone what was originally planned as rather a grand wedding in May, owing to the pandemic.

“Also the controversy which continues to surround Andrew made any public appearance by him unwise.”

He added: “The decision, therefore, to concentrate on the happy couple and Beatrice’s grandparents in the photographs released to the public was an excellent one, as well as the only practical one.

“Aided by fabulous floral backgrounds, they looked extremely happy together.

“The real coup, however, was the presence of the Queen and Prince Philip and, at 99, he looked in splendid form and is involved in a ceremony on Wednesday when the Duchess of Cornwall replaces him as Colonel-in-Chief of the Rifles.”

While some royal fans may wonder why no photos of the bride with her parents or sister were shared with the public, Mr Fitzwilliams claims the decision “made total sense”.

He added: “Beatrice’s sister Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank were present, but did not appear in any of the photos either.

“Since this wedding was a well-kept secret, this choice of photographs made total sense.

“If Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, who live together at nearby Royal Lodge, had been included in them there would have been instant controversy.”
