Prince Philip ‘gave Princess Diana final ultimatum’ in furious row

PRINCE PHILIP gave Princess Diana a final ultimatum in 1992, according to unearthed reports.

The Duke of Edinburgh had been infuriated by Andrew Morton’s biography entitled ‘Diana: Her True Story’, which revealed the fractured state of the princess’ marriage to Charles. Philip believed Diana had indirectly condoned the book by allowing her friends and family to be interviewed, according to the Daily Mirror. The Duke wrote a letter to his daughter-in-law, ordering her to “help maintain the dignity of the Crown”, which left her devastated, according to the paperback version of the biography released later that year.

She reportedly told a friend: “That’s it, I’m out.”

She wrote back to Philip a forthright letter in which she drew a line in the sand, emphasising her role as the mother to the heirs to the throne, William and Harry.

She hinted that she was close to leaving Charles, and Philip backed down.

Diana told a friend: “I wish I’d put my foot down years ago.”PROMOTED STORY

This did not last long, however, and he later shouted at her that the royals would have been better off without her.

It was then that he issued a final ultimatum: to fit in with the rest of the family and behave herself, or face complete exile, leaving her children behind.

While by this time Diana was deeply unhappy in her marriage to Charles, she stayed because she could not bear to give up the boys.

She and Charles embarked on a royal tour of South Korea, during which they were nicknamed “The Glums” because of how demoralised and at odds they looked.

Eventually, it was mutually decided that they would separate and John Major announced it to Parliament on December 9, 1992.

Diana continued living at Kensington Palace, while Charles moved to Highgrove House, but they still saw each other often due to shared custody of the princes.

At first, they insisted they had no plans to divorce, and in Mr Major’s statement it was implied that Diana would still be Queen one day.

However, she admitted in an interview with BBC Panorama in 1995 that she did not think she would ever be Queen.

In 1996, the pair finalised their divorce and, while Diana was free of the unhappy marriage, she was deeply upset at the loss of her HRH status.

When her mother Francis tried to suggest that maybe it was a good thing, she was so angry she stopped talking to her.

Tragically, just a year after the divorce came through, Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris with her companion Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul.

While some may view Philip’s treatment of Diana as somewhat harsh, he was at least consistent in his uncompromising attitude with Sarah Ferguson.

After the infamous pictures of Sarah ‒ affectionately known as Fergie ‒ having her toes sucked by American businessman John Byran came out in the media, she was essentially banished from the family.

Separation and divorce followed and Philip holds a grudge to this day.

Even though Fergie and Andrew remain on good terms ‒ and even lived with each other for decades after their divorce ‒ and the Duchess has even made amends with the Queen, Philip has never forgiven her.

Even after all these years, they cannot stand to be in the same room.

Such is the Duke of Edinburgh’s disposition towards her that he even threatened to boycott Princess Eugenie’s wedding ‒ although in the end he attended and even posed for photographs alongside Fergie for the sake of his granddaughter.
