Prince Harry Says Princess Diana Would Have Been “Best Friends with Meghan”
“It is days like today when I really miss having her around,” Harry said.
While Princess Diana passed away more than 20 years ago, she was still very much a part of her son Prince Harry’s engagement announcement.
Early in the day, Harry and his new fiancé Meghan Markle posed for photos in the the Kensington Palace gardens, which were dedicated to Diana earlier this year.
But that isn’t the only way Harry honored Diana’s memory. Markle’s engagement ringfeatures two diamonds from his mother’s jewelry collection.
“The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s [Markle’s] favorite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” he said during the couple’s first sit-down interview following their engagement announcement.
Markle was obviously moved by her fiancé’s gesture. “It’s incredible,” she said. “Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Princess Diana’s stones] and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.”
“It’s incredibly special to be able to have this [ring], which sort of links where you come form and Botswana, which is important to us,” she told the BBC referencing her trip with Prince Harry to the African country earlier this year. “It’s perfect,” she said of the ring.
During the interview, Harry also shared what his mother would think of his new fiancée, Meghan Markle.
“I think they’d be thick as thieves, without question,” he said.
“I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But then, as I said, [she] would’ve probably been best friends with Meghan.”
Harry also shared that even the happiest moments are tinged with sadness because Diana isn’t there to share them. “It is days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news, but with the ring and with everything else that’s going on, I’m sure she’s with us, jumping up and down somewhere else.”
