Royal staff to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been provided with anti-radiation protection gear as Kensington Palace step up security measures after a letter containing white powder was sent to the couple’s residence, it has been revealed.

Earlier this month a letter, containing a substance purporting to be anthrax, was intercepted by a member of the royal household.

Specialists were rushed in to inspect whether the material was the deadly infectious powered.

The analysis found the powder not to be harmless, but officers are thought to be on high alert ahead of the royal wedding.

Now, post-room workers at Kensington Palace have been issued with safety clothing aimed at protecting them from any future incidents.

A source reportedly said: “The staff tasked with opening letters are now on high alert. They have been given goggles and protective face masks as anthrax and other substances can kill if they are inhaled.

“Staff have joked that it’s like something out of that film, Outbreak, where they deal with the deadly virus.’

In the 1995 thriller starring Dustin Hoffman and Morgan Freeman, a team of doctors was tasked with stopping the spread of a deadly contagious disease.

In the film, the doctors were all provided with large yellow suits, gloves and helmets to protect them from the germs.

The source added: “Police officials have also given them gloves usually worn to handle asbestos.

“The gloves will not only protect skin but maximize the chance of the suspect’s fingerprints staying on the dodgy mail.”

Officers from the Counter-Terror Command unit launched an investigation into the sender of the letter, but so far no arrests have been made.

The police are said to be considering whether the attack was race related.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “Officers are investigating an allegation of malicious communications which relates to the same package, and it is being treated as a racist hate crime.”

The force added: “The matter is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.”
